A Fort Worth veterinarian has been charged with cruelty to animals and theft after lying to a dog’s owners telling them that the family pet had been euthanized.
Dr. Millard (Lou) Tierce’s license has been suspended pending a full investigation of allegations that he kept the family’s dog, Sid, alive to use his blood for transfusions. In October, the doctor allegedly told the owner the dog had a painful spinal condition and needed to be put down, according to local affiliate CBSDFW.
Owners Jamie and Marian Harris, who gave permission for their pet to be euthanized, got a shocking phone call April 21, from a former employee who told them Sid was still alive and being kept caged at the vet’s office so he could be used for blood transfusions. The couple stormed into the clinic to find Sid caged in the back just as she described.
According to Harris, the well-respected vet told her that his staff forced him not to euthanize the dog, threatening they would quit.
Camp Bowie Animal Clinic was investigated immediately after receiving the Harris’ complaint and raided Tuesday by animal care and control authorities.
Tierce, 71, who has been practicing since 1966 and has a clean record, turned himself in Wednesday night. He was released from Tarrant County Jail on $10,000 bail, according to the report.
Despite the allegations, many shocked clients are standing behind him.
