What a fatherless 8-year-old boy gave to a soldier has even choked up the reporter

This is the kind of story you can’t keep to yourself.

CBS Evening News Steve Hartman choked up while interviewing 8-year-old Myles Eckert for a touching Friday segment on an inspiring burst of generosity.

As he dined with his family at a local Cracker Barrel, the Ohio boy was reminded of his father, a soldier killed in Iraq when Myles was just a baby.

A member of the Ohio Air National Guard was having lunch nearby as Myles was contemplating what to do with a $20 bill he found in the parking lot on the way in.

“[W]ith his dad in mind,” Hartman reported, “Myles wrapped the $20 in a note that read, ‘Dear soldier, my dad was a soldier. He’s in heaven now. I found this $20 in the parking lot when we got here. We like to pay it forward in my family. It’s your lucky day! Thank you for your service.’ Signed, ‘a Gold Star kid.'”

Hartman interviewed Lt. Col. Frank Dailey, the lucky recipient, and Eckert in the tear-jerking profile.
