Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is proving to be a tougher adversary than the Obama administration anticipated.
Attorney General Eric Holder‘s overtly politicized Justice Department targeted Arpaio because he had the audacity to enforce this country’s immigration laws, resulting in a civil rights lawsuit being filed.
Predictably, a court found that his office had racially profiled Latinos, but Arpaio now blames the federal government for faulty immigration enforcement training, demanding nearly $38 million to help offset compliance costs associated with the court ruling, according to Fox News.
The judge wrote that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had trained some deputies that race could be a factor in making law enforcement decisions, Fox News reported.
“The federal government’s failures (as set forth above) are the direct result of these expenditures,” America’s “toughest sheriff” wrote in a letter Thursday to Holder and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to the article, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow ruled Arpaio’s office “systematically singled out Latinos in its regular traffic and immigration patrols and that sheriff’s deputies unreasonably prolonged the detentions of people who were pulled over.”
He was required to install video cameras in patrol vehicles, provide additional training and hire a court-appointed official to monitor the agency’s operations.
Justice Department and ICE officials declined Fox News requests to comment on the letter.
