Trayvon Martin’s mother isn’t satisfied with her battle against Florida’s “stand your ground” law. Now she’s trying to change Arizona’s.
Almost-celebrity Sybrina Fulton blames Florida’s law for the jury’s acquittal of the man who shot her son.
“I think the laws have to be changed so that we don’t let people get away with murder,” she said before a crowd in Phoenix, according to local TV station ABC15. “Because that’s what happened. He got away with murder.”
Fulton wants “stand your ground” laws in the nearly 30 other states amended, so that anyone who acts as the initial aggressor cannot use the law to protect themselves at trial.
George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, was acquitted in Martin’s shooting death after claiming self-defense.
Fulton told the Phoenix crowd that “God has chosen her family” to help change laws and prevent racial profiling.
“I said, ‘God, please make sure the person that shot and killed my son be held accountable,’ but God had other plans because if [Zimmerman] would have been convicted, that would be the end of the story, and I would not be sitting here before you right now,” she said.
Despite the uproar Zimmerman’s acquittal sparked over “stand your ground” laws, his lawyers did not use that as a defense, relying instead on evidence that he shot the teen to save his own life.
