Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is refuting committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa’s accusations that the IRS targeting scandal originated in Washington, D.C. are wrong. And Cummings says he has the evidence to prove it.
According to transcripts of a House committee interview, an unnamed IRS manager in the Cincinnati office was a self-described “conservative Republican” and had no reason to believe the White House was involved.
“Do you have any reason to believe that anyone in the White House was involved in the decision to screen Tea Party cases?” the interviewer asked.
“I have no reason to believe that,” the manager replied.
The manager said that the agency’s Cincinnati office, accused of targeting conservative political groups applying for nonprofit status, sent the first case to Washington because they thought it was a “high-profile issue”, not because of political ideology.
“Based upon everything I’ve seen, the case is solved. And if it were me, I would wrap this case up and move on, to be frank with you,” Cummings said.
