Former Marine Jon Hammar, who spent more than four months in a dangerous Mexican prison on a bogus gun charge, spoke to Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly about his ordeal Monday night.
Hammar and a friend were on their way to Costa Rica for a surfing trip. He brought an antique shotgun along to go hunting with, and filled all the proper paperwork out at the U.S. Custom’s checkpoint. However, when he crossed the border into Mexico, he was immediately arrested for having a weapon that does not comply with Mexico’s “gun laws.” Hammar was facing up to 12 years in prison.
Suffering threats against his life, extortion of his family, illness, and being chained to his bed at times, the young Marine told O’Reilly he read, “The Last Stand of Fox Company,” a story about the Marine Corp in N. Korea, and most of the Bible to pass time.
Hammar said he was unaware of the media attention his case was given in the U.S. once his parents decided to go public with the story. Bill asked if he was frustrated by the experience. Hammar replied, “I was frustrated with all the different authorities. I didn’t feel that anything really worked out in my favor. But in the end, I did get out and it worked out without anyone getting hurt.” He also said he doesn’t harbor any resentment against Mexico, but wishes “they’d get their act together.”
Hammar ended by giving thanks to Bill O’Reilly, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Sen. Bill Nelson, and all of Congress for helping to secure his release.
Welcome home, Marine and Godspeed.
