In an incredibly emotional interview with ABC “World News,” first grade teacher, Kaitlin Roig, explained how she barricaded herself and 15 students into a bathroom in her classroom to protect them from the gunman in Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday.
Roig was able to pull a bookshelf in front of the door before she closed it, and then told the children to remain absolutely silent. She told the students, “There are bad guys out there now, we need to wait for the good guys.”
She recounted the many thoughts going through her mind; keeping the children calm, wondering why the gunman wasn’t coming to her classroom, wondering what these little children were thinking, and that she felt it so very important to tell the students she “loved them all very much,” because she truly felt they were all going to die.
A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Roig for her quick action doing whatever she needed to do to protect her students and keep them as calm and quiet as possible in an unfathomable situation.
