Incumbent politicians abusing the power of their office to help themselves get re-elected isn’t much of a surprise to anyone in politics. But it’s wrong, and it is worth pointing out every time it’s done.
Palm Beach County Tax Collector Anne Gannon sent out an email from the Tax Collector’s Office’s address that was nothing more than a thinly disguised campaign advertisement.
Gannon’s email opens with:
Dear Friend,With the primary election just around the corner, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for the honor of serving as your Constitutional Tax Collector. The economic crisis of the last four years has been very challenging for both citizens and public servants. At our agency, we’ve focused on doing more with less and taking actions to reduce costs and increase agency efficiencies. Rising to meet any challenge is just one of the outstanding character traits of our great nation.
Primary Election ReminderI am convinced we will all emerge from these difficulties even stronger Primary Election Reminder Are you ready for the August 14th Florida Primary Election? The right to elect our representatives in free and fair elections is the hallmark of our democracy. The Tuesday, August 14th election has many important federal, state and local offices on the ballot. Read more>
Remember, this is an official government communication, not a campaign email. Reminding taxpayers to vote is not the role of the tax collector, and while it may not quite cross the legal line, it’s close.
This is just a cheesy electioneering ploy by Gannon to help her campaign fend off a challenge by fellow Democrat Peter Carney in the Aug. 14 election.
Gannon has been under fire lately by the local press for doing such a terrible job as tax collector:
Sun Sentinel:Â Â Critics say that can’t rely on Palm Beach County tax data
Palm Beach Post:Title companies: Errors by Palm Beach County tax collector costing us tens of thousands
Gannon is absurdly incompetent and ill-suited for the role of tax collector, but maybe if she spent more time trying to do a good job for taxpayers, she wouldn’t have to abuse her position to get re-elected.
