A Christians Response to the Environmentalist Movement

A Christians Response to the Environmentalist Movement

By James Book

Recently, planet earth celebrated what has been affectionately termed as “Earth Day” This day began sometime in 1970 and has been celebrated by millions of eco-friendly people since. Now before I go off on all the mis-information being circulated in our world about the environment, let me ask you this question, “Do we as Christians have a responsibility to manage and protect our planet?

Now before you answer, think about the term ‘steward’ or ‘manage’.  In Genesis 2:8, 15 Moses tells us, “The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”

Now it does not say that God placed Adam in the Garden to worship it. God did in fact place him there to preserve and regulate it. Even God Himself, after creating the trees of the field and the animal world said “It is good.”  Even God recognized that the creation that He intelligently and with great for-thought designed was indeed a good thing.

If God created this planet, then I believe the scriptures give clear indication that we must be good managers and caretakers of not only our money and possessions, but also the everything we have including planet earth.

The problem, as I see it, is, as a race of people, we are placing more emphasis on the creation and far less attention on the Creator. Paul recognized this problem within the Roman Empire.  That is what provoked the Holy Spirit to direct Paul in writing these words in Romans 1:25 “Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature, rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.”

This is one reason why the modern day “Environmentalist Movement” is so dangerous. Don Feder who writes for the Conservative Chronicle shares that clear back in a 1991 Time magazine article that informed all of its readers, “Nature worship was part of the festivities from Boston to Berkeley… The ceremonies were part of the growing U.S. spiritual movement: Godless worship, the effort to create a female-centered focus for spiritual expression.”  Every time I hear someone refer to our planet as “Mother Earth” this comes to mind.

So yes, we should take a responsible approach to caring for the planet God has loaned us. That can be done with be responsible with the water we use, the way in which we protect our water-ways, and of course the way in which we dispose of waste.  We can take responsible action against poachers and other acts of irresponsible behavior. Christians should never violate the laws that are absolutely essential to keeping our planet safe. But folks what we are being asked to do in the name of environmental protection is absolutely ludicrous.

Take for instance the whole Global Warming argument. Rich Lowry noted journalist for the Conservative Chronicle writes in his May 25, 2006 article, “A 2002 study in Nature found that two-thirds of the continent of Antarctica actually got colder from 1996 to 2000. A 2005 study published in Science looked at about 70 percent of Antarctic’s surface area and reported that the east Antarctic ice sheet had gained- yes, gained- 45 billion tons of ice annually between 1992 and 2003.”

That is why the liberal environmentalist are now calling it “Climate Change” not Global Warming” I recognize, as does every scientist, that Global Warming is real. No one doubts the fact that our planet has experienced climate change over the years. William Rusher writes, according to Dr. Fred Singer professor emeritus of Environmental sciences at the University of Virginia, and former director of the U.S. Weather Satellite Service, “We are seeing a warming trend of about one-tenth of a degree centigrade per decade, or roughly a degree per century.”” This is hardly enough climate change to call for the mass hysteria coming from the likes of Al Gore and his cronies.

Paul warns the church at Colossae to be on the lookout for those espousing, “Empty and deceitful philosophies.” In fact Paul goes on to say in Colossians 2:8 that we can be cheated by these false prophets if we allow them to corrupt our thinking and channel our energy in a direction that is based on equivocations and untruths.

The fact remains that our earth cannot truly be preserved. We can practice conservation as good stewards of the planet God has loaned to us, but we cannot ever hope to preserve it.  Peter tells us in II Peter 3:10-13 “The elements shall melt with a fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. We according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, which righteousness dwells.”

Folks that’s real global warming!!!

Jesus said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away” This is a promise it’s not a threat. Jesus and Peter are not eco-insensitive. They are reminding the population that this earth, because of sin, will be destroyed. Christians would be better served to remind our friends and neighbors that we should spend more time managing the soul and less time hugging the trees.

In closing the facts are clear. The environmentalists today want to control every aspect of our lives. Humans produce only 5% of the carbon dioxide emissions into our atmosphere. In fact if we were to ban all automobiles in the world it would only reduce carbon dioxide by 1.4%.  Nature itself produces 95% of all carbon dioxide into our air.

The “Greenies” want desperately to control our behavior, our mode of transportation, what we can eat, the number of children we can have and how we live our daily lives.

The hyper environmentalist want to do this by using false information, by scarring everyone into submission and by doing everything within their power to eclipse God from the glory do His name. This is a selfish movement based on false theories and twisted political agendas.

After it is all said and done we could indeed have the cleanest air controlled by the most polluted minds….
