Jimmy Kimmel says he lost half his fans over Trump smears, threatened to quit if network squashed jokes

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel revealed on the “Naked Lunch” podcast Thursday that he lost at least half of his fanbase after making anti-Trump jokes and threatened to quit if ABC didn’t allow him to keep smearing the former president.

“I have lost half of my fans — maybe more than that,” the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host remarked during the podcast. He noted that “10 years ago among Republicans, I was the most popular talk show host.”

The comic went on to recount that when Trump was running for office the first time, ABC executives “hinted” he should back off on jokes about him.

“I just said, ‘If that’s what you want to do, I understand and I don’t begrudge you for it, but I’m not going to do that,’” he told co-hosts Phil Rosenthal and David Wild.

Despite admitting that being more politically neutral in his comedy monologues would boost ratings, he told ABC, “If you want somebody else to host the show, then that’s fine. That’s OK with me. I’m just not going to do it like that.”

Then he claimed that the executives backed off pressuring him because they knew he was “serious.”

“I couldn’t live with myself [otherwise],” Kimmel stated.

Rosenthal then kissed up to Kimmel, telling him he was doing a “public service” with his show.

Kimmel went on to paint himself as some kind of patriot for bashing Trump. He said he doesn’t think what he does is “grandiose” but “I love this country too. That flag doesn’t belong to them. This is ours. And when I see somebody coming in and ruining it I’m going to say something about it.”

The leftist late-night host is “proud” to speak against Trump. However, he does know that “there’s a sacrifice you make when it comes to your audience and you could do pretty well if you just stayed down the middle.”

Kimmel showed just how unhinged he is when it comes to the former president, stating that he believes Trump will be nailed for the attack on the nation’s Capitol and that he “[wants] to be on the air when Donald Trump goes to jail.”

“I still believe it that justice triumphs in America — and I know there were a billion different examples to the contrary — but there just seemed to be too many different cases against him,” he continued. “I mean, how can you commit this many crimes and be this unethical and be this, just this terrible, and get away with it?”

Kimmel’s show has been on the air since 2003. His ratings have tanked over the last few years as have those for the other leftist late-night hosts. That was until Fox News sensation Greg Gutfeld came along who doesn’t bash Trump and is actually funny. His show ratings are through the roof.

“No one is watching network television anymore,” Kimmel claimed in his interview, contending that most people watch his show online. His show’s YouTube channel has 18.9 million subscribers currently.
