Don Lemon puts on a brave face over coffee with co-hosts in slick ‘CNN This Morning’ promo

CNN’s Don Lemon, known best for being half of an on-air bromance with former host Chris Cuomo, was featured in a promo for his new time slot on “CNN This Morning.”

In the ad, a turtle-neck-wearing Lemon is joined by Kaitlan Collins and Poppy Harlow, who all sit down at a table for a discussion on how they all met. Collins reveals she was “a freshman” when her fellow hosts began their gigs with the news network.

“High school, college?” Harlow asks.

“Actually, I think it was the eighth grade,” Collins clarifies, prompting shocked responses from the other two.

The anchors openly discussed how they plan to reach their audience as well as their philosophy when it comes to how they will approach the show.

“A morning show is like when people walk into a diner,” Lemon asserts. “You come in and you get whatever amount of news that you can, then you start your day.”

“People’s time is so valuable that if they give 15 minutes to watch the news, that’s a lot of time,” Collins added.

“We need to cover more of what is happening across America,” Harlow suggests, later adding, “People just want to be heard.”

“It’s really all about the conversation. We’re the place for accuracy and we’re the place for context,” Lemon added, perhaps to the humor of his critics who remember the not-so-distant past in which the CNN host ranted nightly about former President Donald Trump’s every word and movement.

The shift from a nightly prime time slot to a daily morning show is a stark one for Lemon, who many described as being demoted following the takeover by CNN’s new president, Chris Licht.

Licht has been steering the news outlet in a new editorial direction, seemingly away from the habitual Trump-bashing and “opinion-based partisanship.” However, Lemon asserted that this didn’t necessarily apply to him, claiming all he does on CNN is “tell the truth.” He also warned that if he “wasn’t allowed to do that” at CNN, he would take his on-air talents elsewhere.

“Yes, I will be able to do what I do on CNN…which is to tell the truth, which is to inform the American electorate and the American public and also the world, because we’re an international news organization. So if I’m not allowed to do that, then I will go on and do it somewhere else,” he quipped in an interview with Charlamagne Tha God.

But when Lemon was unceremoniously moved to a daytime slot with two other hosts, he appeared to pretend that it was something he had wanted, rather than a position he was shoved into.

“The last eight years have been an incredible ride. I’ve had the opportunity to work with one of the best show teams in the business, but it’s time to shake things up. I am so appreciative of the ‘Don Lemon Tonight’ team, my wonderful, loyal viewers and everyone who has believed in me,” he explained in a statement.

“I was honestly floored when Chris Licht asked me to do this and I’m honored by his belief in me. It’s going to be a thrill to take on this challenge with Poppy and Kaitlan. I’ll get to work with two of my dearest friends. Set your alarms folks, because we’re going to have a lot of fun.”
