VA Dem tries to skirt bill criminalizing parents who don’t ‘affirm’ child’s gender identity, GOP calls bluff: ‘File it’

The “progressive” Virginia Democrat who purportedly wants to criminalize parents who are insufficiently gender-affirming now reportedly says she has decided against submitting the controversial bill after all.

Republicans who control the lower chamber of the state legislature want to call her bluff, however.

“Virginia Delegate Elizabeth Guzman (D-Prince William) says she will not reintroduce a bill that would reportedly penalize parents who do not affirm their children’s gender identity or sexual orientation…The offices of several patrons of the 2020 bill told WUSA9 that the bill does not have the support to pass it and that the Republican House Speaker will never put it up for a vote. Delegate Guzman still stands by the original purpose of the legislation,” CBS Washington, D.C., affiliate WUSA reported on Saturday.

“On Thursday, Guzman told WJLA that she wanted to push back on Gov. Glen Youngkin’s proposed model policy on the treatment of transgender students.”

The bill was quickly denounced by several high-profile national Republicans, such as U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.).

Contrary to the assumptions of the bill’s supporters, Todd Gilbert, the Republican Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, tweeted, in effect, not so fast:

“I pledge to @guzman4virginia that I will send her bill to the floor for a vote. File it,” Gilbert declared.

The upcoming legislative session convenes on January 11, 2023.

“House Minority Leader Don Scott Jr., D-Portsmouth, said Friday that Guzman’s proposal in Thursday’s television interview would be ‘dead on arrival’ in the next General Assembly session if it is introduced, which he said he doubts. Scott said Guzman introduced the same legislation — House Bill 580 — in 2020, when Democrats controlled both chambers of the assembly, and then let it die in House subcommittee without a vote,” the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

In a series of tweets on Friday, Del. Guzman, a social worker, insisted that her “pro-safety, anti-abuse bill” originally introduced in 2020 was mischaracterized in the media and that GOP Gov. Youngkin, who was elected on a pro-parent platform, “is a bully.”

As part of his monologue on Friday evening, Fox News host Tucker Carlson called out the liberal politician for the bill’s alleged onerous, if not draconian, provisions, in the video clip embedded above.

“[A] Democratic lawmaker in Virginia called Elizabeth Guzman is introducing a bill that will charge parents with a felony, strip them of their employment, and imprison them if they don’t wholeheartedly endorse their minor children’s sex changes. So, your 12-year-old daughter says she wants a mastectomy. If you object to that in any way, if you raise questions, Elizabeth Guzman will send you to jail, for real…in this country, according to Elizabeth Guzman, you have to affirm your child’s sex change or else you’re going to prison, and the state will raise your kids,” Carlson claimed.

Tucker played a soundbite from a report from the aforementioned ABC D.C. affiliate WJLA suggesting that a parent could face a felony or misdemeanor according to police investigation under Guzman’s proposed legislation that reportedly “would expand the state’s definition of child abuse and neglect to include parents who do not affirm their child’s gender identity or sexual orientation.”

Here is just some of the reaction on Twitter to Del. Guzman’s on-again, off-again legislation:
