Senior prosecutors say they were demoted after criticizing Gascon’s policies, suspect retaliation

A trio of senior prosecutors are speaking out against far-left Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón after they were demoted following criticism of his criminal-coddling policies that have turned the City of Angels into a hellish happy hunting ground for lawless thugs preying on helpless citizens.

The embattled Gascón – who had the good fortune to survive a recall effort after an astonishing 30 percent of the ballots were invalidated – was blasted by the two career law enforcement professionals, one of whom, John McKinney, recently won a conviction against the murderer of rapper Nipsey Hussle, for what they believe is retaliation.

According to a Fox News report, “McKinney and John Lewin, both deputy district attorneys in the Major Crimes Division, and Jason Lustig, assistant head deputy attorney overseeing the Long Beach courthouse, learned Thursday that they would be shunted to low-level positions in two weeks; however, their salaries will not change.”

“The DA is reassigning me to retaliate against me for calling attention to the fact that he’s incompetent and not following the law in the state of California,” said McKinney, who in July, announced that if the recall of Gascón succeeded, that he would run to replace him, according to the outlet.

“I am only a month and half away from having prosecuted one of the highest profile cases in our office in recent memory, and I’m being reassigned to a job of literally no consequence,” McKinney said, referring to the high-profile case of Hussle’s 2019 murder.

On Thursday, McKinney – a 24-year veteran in the DA’s office – was informed by a supervisor that “he will be transferred to a small area office overseeing misdemeanor prosecutions,” Fox News reported.

“Gascón hopes no one will hear from me or see me when he tries to position himself for re-election in 2024,” he said. “He has been playing politics with public safety for two years now. This act of retaliation will not silence me.”

McKinney’s current cases including the brutal stabbing of a UCLA graduate student in the furniture store where she worked earlier this year, will be reassigned.

Lustig, another victim of Gascón’s apparent revenge told Fox News Digital, “It’s clear retaliation. I’ve been hurt professionally and economically, and it’s extremely stressful,” the 33-year veteran said. “It’s taking me back to the position I held in 1994, my fifth year in the DA’s office.”

“Although his pay will not change, the transfer essentially stymies any shot at a future promotion and increases his commute from seven to 30 miles, he said. Both McKinney and Lustig described their new positions as blatant demotions,” according to the outlet.

“They’re destroying morale, destroying operations of the office,” he said. “They’re instilling fear in anyone who might have the courage to speak out against this DA and his policies.”

Lewin, who will be transferred to the Inglewood office which has only one felony courtroom despite his winning of a conviction last year against real estate heir Robert Durst in another high-profile trial that received major media attention, declined to comment according to Fox News.

“The office routinely conducts personnel transfers,” a spokesperson for Gascón’s office told Fox News Digital in a statement, denying that the transfers were demotions. “This transfer list included nearly 50 employees including new DDA hires. No employees were demoted during this process.”
