Jared Kushner, who was father-in-law Donald Trump’ senior advisor during the latter’s presidential administration, is using flamboyant language, including a metaphorical reference to terrorism, when asked about “MAGA cheerleader” Steve Bannon, a man he regularly clashed with during their brief overlap in the White House.
Kushner is on a book tour for his memoir “Breaking History: A White House Memoir,” and on Friday was interviewed on The Hugh Hewitt Show.
Hewitt teed it up for Kushner by wondering why Trump is so perpetually negative toward now U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell despite their past partnership in elevating three conservatives to the Supreme Court while President Trump is so nice to “malignant figure” Steve Bannon.
“Look, the president has his different preferences. I think if you look at Steve — so Steve was actually with us very early. He was great on the campaign. He was a great partner in that. When it got to the White House, I think maybe the power got to his head a little bit or he just — it was being more of what he was,” Kushner, 41, who is married to Ivanka Trump, replied.
“And it became very divisive. He was undermining us, he was knife-fighting with colleagues, and it just wasn’t helping us implement the agenda. That was very unfortunate, but one thing I write about in the book is – I go through a lot of the different interpersonal dynamics – is that I ended up not defeating Steve. Steve really defeated himself, you know. His head got so big; he was just doing all these crazy things, and the ultimately just, you know, like a suicide bomber, blew up. And I think he’s gone on to reinvent himself as a big MAGA cheerleader, which is good and helpful.”

With a more conciliatory note about his frenemy, Kushner reportedly added, “I think that Steve is somebody who I portray as he is. He’s a very smart person, he’s a very talented person, and he’s somebody who’s a very formidable opponent. And I still don’t know how we kind of got to become opponents.”
Elsewhere in the book, Kushner reportedly has described Bannon as a “toxic” presence and someone who allegedly leaked inside information to the media and who once supposedly physically threatened to break him “in half” during one of their heated exchanges.
These details aside, in any administration generally, a certain degree of revisionist history emerges when those it its orbit get book deals.

“Bannon became an outsized presence in the Trump White House, where he served as chief strategist with a wide portfolio and where he kept a white board filled with Trump campaign promises while battling people he viewed as ‘globalists’ and swamp creatures,” the Daily Mail recalled. Bannon left the White House in August 2017.
Bannon, 68, who was the executive chairman of Breitbart News and is now the host of the popular War Room podcast on the Real America’s Voice network, could be facing the possibility of jail time in the near future.
In late July, a liberal D.C. federal jury found Bannon guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for declining to respond to a subpoena from the hyper-partisan J6 committee. He is due to be sentenced on October 21, and his legal team plans to appeal the verdict.
