Foreign policy and diplomacy are serious concerns with global ramifications as evidenced by the impacts President Joe Biden’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan and toothless deterrents against the Russian invasion of Ukraine have had.
Despite this reality, Democrats allowed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a politician playing at leader, to meddle in international relations while juvenilely pandering to voters to curry favor in response to serious concerns that her actions could incite a war.
At the tail-end of her trip through the Indo-Pacific wherein her congressional delegation visited Taiwan in lieu of numerous threats from the Chinese government, Pelosi was asked at a press conference at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan if the military drills from China in response to her tip would affect U.S.-Chinese relations.
Behaving as though she were campaigning rather than potentially damaging the balance of the global supply chain, the speaker recounted a decades-old tale about her experiences as a child and how she feels about China, saying, “When I was a little girl, I was told when at the beach, that if I dug a hole deep enough we would reach China.”

“So, we’ve always felt a connection there,” she went on, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the Chinese drills were threatening the stability of the entire region.
While Pelosi was spouting tales of her youth, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was making his own rounds of nearby nations to reinforce adherence to the One China policy, and while in Bangladesh he accused the United States of engaging in “sophistry” with the intent of claiming Taiwan as its own.
Prior to that message, he had been in Cambodia where he suggested former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s (R-Ga.) 1997 trip had been equally inappropriate while potentially hinting at the United States’ founding through colonization as part of a long-term objective in the region.

“It was a serious mistake that then-speaker Newt Gingrich visited Taiwan. The Chinese government has strongly opposed it. The United States does not have any right or qualification to do the same wrong and make the same mistake again. Past mistakes cannot be used as an excuse to repeat them today. Is the United States going to do all the bad things it has done over again in its history?” the foreign minister asked before going on, “Do you have the right to do it again today because you did it in the past? This is not common sense and is not worth refuting. I hope the U.S. side will not use this excuse to prevaricate.”
A spokesperson from his office had issued a statement in a similar vein arguing, “In disregard of China’s grave concerns and firm opposition, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi insisted on visiting China’s Taiwan region. This constitutes a gross interference in China’s internal affairs. It gravely undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously tramples on the one-China principle, and severely threatens peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
As a result, sanctions had been imposed on Pelosi and her family, “in accordance with relevant laws of the People’s Republic of China.”
What readily appears as folly was lauded by her colleagues in Congress from both sides of the aisle with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) telling CNN, “She should’ve gone. I’m glad she went,” and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) contending “What President Xi decided to do was manufacture a crisis. This is saber rattling, and chest-thumping.”
Whether or not Chinese President Xi Jinping is doing as Van Hollen suggested, Pelosi has only fed into that manufacturing and the dismissal of potential conflict should raise serious concerns about the aims and objectives of Biden’s foreign policy agenda.
