Senator Susan Collins of Maine suggested that the Democrat bill codifying same-sex marriages could be in trouble in the Senate after the GOP was badly stung by the unexpected resurrection of sweeping climate change legislation thought to be dead, a development that left many in the minority party fuming.
Collins is one of the gaggle of feckless Republicans open to joining Democrats in the upper chamber to pass a bill which is the product of fearmongering that the conservative Supreme Court would soon move to overturn homosexual unions, but the sudden revival of the massive climate and tax package that is critical to President Joe Biden’s extreme “Build Back Better” agenda may have queered the deal.
The Democrat bill, which in addition to nearly $400 billion for utopian climate initiatives, also raises corporate taxes and includes funds to dramatically beef up the Internal Revenue Service into a fearsome monster empowered to aggressively increase government revenues to fund the latest Democrat boondoggle, not to mention the likelihood that it will be weaponized for political means in a similar way that the Justice Department and FBI have under the Biden regime.
In remarks to left-wing website the Huffington Post, Collins said that prospects for the passage of the “Respect for Marriage Act” are far dimmer today than they were prior to moderate Dem Joe Manchin’s flip-flopping on the Orwellian-named “Inflation Reduction Act” which is almost certain to pass in the Senate under the reconciliation process.
“After we just had worked together successfully on gun safety legislation, on the CHIPs bill, it was a very unfortunate move that destroys the many bipartisan efforts that are under way,” Collins told HuffPo.
“I just think the timing could not have been worse and it came totally out of the blue,” she added.
Prior to Manchin’s change of heart, the gay marriage bill was inching toward passage with a number of Senate Republicans joining ranks with their Democrat colleagues to overcome a filibuster; now its fate is uncertain.
Asked by the outlet whether the bill would have to be postponed until the fall until after tensions have died down, Collins who is a champion of LGBTQ+ rights said, “I don’t know and I’m going to continue to work for support for the bill.”

In addition to the grandstanding Collins, the Democrats’ gay marriage bill has also drawn support from other senators including Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rob Portman of Ohio, Thom Tillis of North Carolina along with several others who were open to the legislation.
