The New York Times was under fire after an article was published on Saturday that revealed countless recent pop culture sources that seemed to be “normalizing” eating human flesh.
“Turns out, cannibalism has a time and a place,” New York Times writer Alex Beggs argued in his piece titled, “A Taste for Cannibalism?”
Beggs noted how the practice has been front and center “in the pages of some recent stomach-churning books,” and other media, and promoted one author’s outlandish claim that the “time is now” for cannibalism.
He reported in the Style section that the Los Angeles-based co-creators of a gruesome Showtime series “Yellowjackets” were hoping for “the plot to hint that human consumption wasn’t merely for the characters’ survival.”
“I think we’re often drawn to the things that repulse us the most,” creator Ashley Lyle said about the series featuring a stranded soccer team struggling to survive in the wilderness.
Co-creator Bart Nickerson added, “But I keep coming back to this idea of, what portion of our revulsion to these things is a fear of the ecstasy of them?”
“I think that we’re obviously in a very strange moment,” Lyle commented, adding that a variety of contemporary social issues such as political polarization, school shootings, the Covid-19 pandemic, and climate change may have contributed to arriving at this point.
But as unusual as the past couple of years have been, it’s difficult to imagine that we’ve arrived at cannibalism as the answer.

“I feel like the unthinkable has become the thinkable,” Ms. Lyle said, “and cannibalism is very much squarely in that category of the unthinkable.”
Some proposed that the article was just getting the populous ready for pending mass food shortages predicted by President Joe Biden himself.

But the article also had the possibly unintended consequence of having a huge swath of people question the journalistic integrity of the New York Times.
