House Intel Republicans travel to El Paso to reinforce ‘astronomical’ threat of ‘porous’ border

Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee once again drove home how the “astronomical” threat posed by the “porous” border would be readily apparent to President Joe Biden’s administration if any of them could be bothered to go see for themselves, despite claims to the contrary by Department of Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Ohio Reps. Mike Turner and Brad Wenstrup were joined by fellow Republican Rep. Rick Crawford (Ark.) on a trip to El Paso, Texas Friday spurred by statements made earlier in the week by Mayorkas. As reported, the secretary had stated despite all reason, “Look, the border is secure. We are working to make the border more secure. That has been a historic challenge.”

In speaking with Fox News Digital, Turner argued such a claim flies in the face of reality as he told the outlet, “What’s amazing is what the Biden administration is saying is just not true. The border is not secure. The amount of drugs that are occurring, the human trafficking, the human toll by having this border being unsecured is astronomical.”

The sentiment was echoed by Crawford who stated, “The message coming from DHS secretary Mayorkas is absolutely false. The border is not secure and border patrol will tell you that, and they need more help.”

“We met with the FBI, the Texas Department of Safety, the Border Patrol. What’s clear as we stand here on the border is that the border is not secure. Thousands of people are being apprehended a day, others can’t even be captured,” Turner explained. “The amount of drugs, even guns, that go across the border, the cash that are all part of illegal activity, human trafficking. The toll that’s happening on people who are crossing this border is extraordinary.”

Turner expressed that the number of illegal immigrants not from this hemisphere was “enormous” and “These individuals are a threat to our national security.”

“Many are from countries that have very questionable purposes when they come here,” he added as he made the case for completing the border wall. “You have people who are on the terrorism watch list, people who are known terrorists, there is a threat of them crossing the border. People who have been apprehended fall within those categories. This represents an absolute threat and danger to our country, and it could be stopped if this border wall was completed.”

“I talked with a couple individual agents and all of them have stories where they have encountered this taking place,” Crawford noted. “Young girls being sexually abused. They are a commodity to the cartels, they are a renewable resource. Every bit as valuable, if not more than the drugs that they are trafficking.”

All three noted the dangers of drugs and Wenstrup, a physician, emphasized how “extremely dangerous” the prevalence of fentanyl had become. “And so I look at it almost as a weapon of mass destruction that’s coming across our border and I worry about it being used in other nefarious ways.”

“The administration is turning a blind eye to all the needs and also turning a blind eye to the effects this is having on all of America, not just our border towns,” Wenstrup added the same week that progressive mayors Eric Adams of NYC and Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C. had lamented illegal immigrants being shipped toward the northeast.

Meanwhile, agents have expressed, “Under Biden, things are the worst they have ever been by far” and the president has “demonized agents” leading to a complete loss of morale for the frontline in maintaining national security at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“My advice would be come down here, see for yourself and engage with border patrol agents and find out what a fantastic job they’re doing,” Crawford added as he outlined the challenges faced daily. “You put them in a very unenviable position. They’re [having] rocks thrown at them on one side, and negative rhetoric from the American people on the other. So come down and talk to them and you’ll find out they’re fine people.”
