Fox & Friends equate Biden op-ed to ‘permission slip’ before ‘begging for oil’ in trip to Saudi Arabia

Reacting to a Washington Post op-ed ostensibly written by President Joe Biden, the “Fox & Friends” crew mocked the incumbent POTUS for traveling to Saudi Arabia to “beg for oil” and for what amounts to seeking “a permission slip” to engage with that authoritarian Middle Eastern regime.

During the 2020 election cycle, Biden branded Saudi Arabia a “pariah” for its human rights abuses. In addition to criticism over the lack of civil liberties, Saudi Arabia top leadership was allegedly involved in the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Moreover, fifteen of the 19 hijackers that carried out the 9/11 terrorist attacks were reportedly Saudi citizens.

In the WaPo essay, Biden, or one of his ghostwriters, acknowledged that “I know that there are many who disagree with my decision to travel to Saudi Arabia. My views on human rights are clear and long-standing, and fundamental freedoms are always on the agenda when I travel abroad, as they will be during this trip, just as they will be in Israel and the West Bank.”

He also claimed, among other things, that the Saudis in their supposed OPEC-unifying role are currently working with “his experts” in a quest “to help stabilize oil markets.”

Biden also wrote that he wants to “strengthen a strategic partnership” with Saudi Arabia.

“But his framing of the Saudi relationship in particular appeared defensive, especially with some in the U.S. demanding that he not lend legitimacy to the government with a visit,” ABC News observed.

Co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy underscored Biden’s foolhardy and ideological-driven decision, especially given soaring inflation and related pain at the pump, to block much of the U.S. domestic fossil fuel production upon taking office in a reversal of the Donald Trump America First policy.

Biden “is going to Saudi Arabia to basically beg for oil because he doesn’t want America to be energy independent as we were just…a year ago, two years ago,” she asserted on Sunday in the video clip embedded above.

“He wants to beg the Saudis, and he feels the need to explain why he’s going to Saudi Arabia because he had a lot of not nice things to say about Saudi Arabia…his staff wrote an Op-Ed that he signed off from his basement somewhere.”

Campos-Duffy’s colleague Joey Jones implied that Biden is making a false equivalency between the Saudi regime and a democracy like Israel (which is no particular surprise given that the left has become increasingly hostile to the latter country).

With some faint praise for Biden, Jones went on to say that “It is a grown-up point of view, of ‘hey, we have to work with people that don’t treat their people the way we treat our people.’ But you can’t be a hypocrite in that either. You can’t condemn it when it is convenient and then try to gloss over it when it is convenient.

“That’s what people appreciated about Trump. I never felt like Trump tried to sell us a bad bill of goods on who he was working with from North Korea to Saudi Arabia. If he thought he would get something done that would benefit the American people, he never used words to paint himself into a corner he couldn’t get back out of. But when you get into office, basically virtue signaling the whole way there, it makes it real tricky when you have to actually do the job,” Jones noted.

“Can you imagine Trump writing an Op-Ed to explain himself to anyone?” Jones asked rhetorically.

“It’s like a permission slip,” co-host Pete Hegseth chimed in.

“I feel like great when Saudi Arabia is working with Joe Biden’s experts,” Hegseth continued satirically. “‘My experts are working with them to stabilize the market.’ It’s going great so far…the entire trip is about begging for oil. It doesn’t have to happen. It also has no strategic significance in that when Donald Trump went to Saudi Arabia, which he did on his first overseas trip, it was part of a triangulation that really none of us saw coming that had Israel’s benefit in mind.”

Referencing the Abraham Accords negotiated during the Trump administration, Hegseth added that “it created a whole new renaissance in the Middle East that created partnerships for Israel, a recognition of Jewish state which hadn’t really been codified at all by those Gulf States.”

One of the differences here is that Biden’s diplomatic overtures also include trying to rejoin the flawed Iran nuclear deal using Russia, of all countries, as the go-between, Hegseth contended. “So that’s not really working,” Hegseth claimed, “at the same time empowering Iran in the process. Now they’re begging for oil, and apologizing for going there in the first place…

“They’re trying to undo everything Donald Trump did,” Hegseth insisted about the Biden administration’s catastrophic reversal of many domestic and international policies in effect under the Trump presidency.

Campos-Duffy, who wondered why Biden omitted CCP-controlled China in his concern over human rights, pointed out that Saudi Arabia “is not the only evil dictatorship that [Biden] is going to beg for oil from. He’s also going to Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela…we don’t need to do it. It’s under our feet…”
