Wyoming Rep Liz. Cheney believes the Republican Party will cease to exist if former President Donald Trump is chosen as the 2024 GOP presidential nominee.
“It can’t survive if he’s our nominee. … I think that he can’t be the party nominee, and I don’t think the party would survive that. I believe in the party, and I believe in what the party can be and what the party can stand for, and I’m not ready to give that up,” she said Sunday morning on ABC News’ “This Week.”
“Those of us who believe in Republican principles and ideals have a responsibility to try to lead the party back to what it can be and to reject so much of the toxin and the vitriol. … Millions of people, millions of Republicans have been betrayed by Donald Trump. And that is a really painful thing for people to recognize and to admit, but it’s absolutely the case.”
She added, “And they’ve been betrayed by him, by the big lie, and by what he continues to do and say to tear apart our country and tear apart our party. And I think we have to reject that.”
The irony is that, while she may believe in the Republican Party, the GOP and its base don’t believe in her. Not even an iota.

Nor does the data back Cheney’s Democrat-like rhetoric about the demise of the Republican Party. Polling data shows that the GOP is poised to decimate Democrats in 2022. Polls also show that were Trump to run against current President Joe Biden again, he’d most likely win.
At one point, ABC News’ Jonathan Karl asked Cheney if she could see herself running for president “as a way to prevent what you say would be the destruction of the party, ultimately damaging our country?”
Cheney’s response suggested she is considering such a run.
“I haven’t made a decision about that yet.” she said. “And I’m obviously very focused on my re-election, I’m very focused on the January 6th committee. I’m very focused on my obligations to do the job I have now. And I’ll make a decision about ’24 down the road.”
Continuing her remarks on ABC News, the greatly despised “Republican” also said she believes she will win her primary election next month.
“I don’t intend to lose the Republican primary in Wyoming. … I think it’s important [I win] because I will be the best representative that the people of Wyoming can have. The single most important thing is protecting the nation from Donald Trump,” she told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl.
“And I think that that matters to us as Americans more than anything else and that’s why my work on the Committee is so important and why it’s so important to not just brush this passed, I think it’s very important that people know the truth and that there are consequences.”
Listen:
Despite Cheney’s rhetoric, polling data shows her trailing her Wyoming GOP primary opponent by double digits.
“GOP Rep. Liz Cheney is down 30 points in a new survey of her August primary conducted by the Club for Growth, which is opposing the embattled incumbent,” Politico reported in late May.
“The poll, which provides perhaps the starkest illustration yet of the political peril Cheney faces this year, shows Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman garnering 56 percent of the vote to Cheney’s 26 percent in the GOP primary. A third Republican got 12 percent support, and just 6 percent are undecided.”
During the ABC News interview, Cheney also defended the widely criticized Jan. 6th hearings by saying they’re necessary because Trump can never be allowed a chance back into the White House.
“[T]he goal of the hearings is to make sure that Americans understand what happened, to help inform legislation, legislative changes that we might need to make. But I think it’s also the case that there’s not a single thing that I have learned as we have been involved in this investigation that has made me less concerned and I think there’s no question, I mean, a man as dangerous as Donald Trump can absolutely never be anywhere near the Oval Office ever again,” she said.
Members of the GOP base, who for the most part are repulsed by Cheney, were quick to clap back on social media.
Look:
What a coincidence. You’re never gonna be near DC ever again either.

Sour grapes Liz! You are the one who should never be allowed in or near our Nation’s Capital ever again!

The Wyoming voter and the republican party have spoken, Liz Cheney is history. Trump will be the next president and Liz will be working graveyard shift at 7/11.

It’s not clear why Cheney remains so cocky and arrogant in the face of such horrible polling numbers.
