If you’re white, and you were planning on attending a federally-mandated “Juneteenth” BBQ cookout this weekend…well, you can forget it, because you’re not welcome.
At least that’s according to Melina Abdullah, professor of Pan-African studies at California State University Los Angeles (where else?), who issued a tweet/diktat in which she declared that white folks are most assuredly not welcome at any Juneteenth cookouts that may be in the offing. It should also be observed that Abdullah’s tweets carry the same authority reserved for Papal encyclicals and Islamic fatwas, and therefore must not be disobeyed.
“Attention white people…,” Abdullah wrote on Monday. “Please don’t ask if you can come to the cookout… #Juneteenth is freedom day for Black folks. It should be #Reparations day for white folks.”

And with that summary declaration, Abdullah unilaterally dashed the tentative hopes of millions of white people across the country. Juneteenth, for those who don’t know, falls on June 19, and last year was declared a federal holiday by “Put Y’all Back in Chains” Biden.
Melina Abdullah is no stranger to the limelight. It was only just last month that she was booted from the Los Angeles mayoral debate for making a scene, and she’s made something of a name for herself calling everyone from Larry Elder to Elon Musk an irredeemable racist.
Meanwhile, Abdullah’s tasteless and unsolicited tweet received some much-deserved backlash.
“That’s extremely racist,” one person responded. To which Abdullah shot back: “1. Define racism. 2. Why do you think that?”
Someone else replied: “OK. 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usu. involving the idea that one’s own race is superior. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based on such a doctrine.” Abdullah apparently had no rejoinder.
OK.

But the decree promulgated by Abdullah, who describes herself in her Twitter bio as a “#BlackLivesMatter organizer,” doesn’t seem to be the last word on the matter. According to podcaster and writer Touré, Abdullah’s take on the matter is completely wrongheaded.
“Juneteenth isn’t just for Black people,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “If you believe slavery was wrong then you should celebrate the end of slavery.”
“Here’s why white people should be part of Juneteenth celebrations—because white people should be acknowledging that slavery happened,” he added. “Many of them would love to not do that. It’s valuable for us to have them acknowledge it and see it as something that still impacts us today.
“Slavery isn’t Black history. It’s American history. If we restrict it to Black history and restrict Juneteenth to Black people then we allow white people to escape having to think about it.”

Honestly, nothing about this seems remotely enjoyable. Better just to wait until the Fourth of July.
