The husband of a heroic teacher who sacrificed her life to protect her students during the horrific massacre at a Texas elementary school has passed away after a heart attack on Thursday, two days after the sudden loss of the love of his life, dying of a “broken heart” according to family members.
Joe Garcia had reportedly just finished placing flowers at a memorial for his slain high school sweetheart and wife of 24 years when he had a fatal heart attack as he sat down at the kitchen table with family members, another casualty of the murderous rampage by 18-year-old Salvadore Ramos who cold-bloodedly slaughtered 19 young children and two adults in their classroom on Tuesday, one of the victims being 46-year-old Irma Garcia who died as she shielded her students.

In a telephone interview with the Detroit Free Press, Martinez said, “What happened was my Uncle Joe went to go leave flowers for my Tia (Aunt) Irma, his wife, and whenever he got back, he sat down at the kitchen table with his entire family, and after 3 minutes, he just fell over.”
“I’m told my mom was giving him chest compressions. It happened around 10 o’clock. I know my little brother was there,” he added.
Joe Garcia visited his wife’s memorial this morning to place flowers on a cross with her name on it. Joe is the husband to Irma Garcia. Not long after Joe visited Irma’s memorial, he suffered a heart attack and died.

Garcia, who turned 50 last month was taken to the hospital after he was stricken.
“They called the ambulance and I was told they couldn’t bring him back. They took him to Uvalde Memorial Hospital. I’m not sure if they confirmed his death at the house or the hospital,” Martinez told the outlet.

The couple have four children, the youngest of whom is 12, who are now suddenly left without both of their parents.
“Honestly, it genuinely feels like I got hit by another truck. It just doesn’t make sense,” Martinez said. “My heart hurts so bad for my four cousins. I did hear from my little brother that my dad’s chest was hurting, as well. My parents lost family and their best friends.”
“I know the families, so it’s difficult,” Father Eduardo Morales told WFAA.
“They were church-going people, always willing to help, always seeing what they could do in the community, not just their children. and I hope that we remember how giving they were,” Morales said.
Three of the children were seen being comforted in church as they attended a service Thursday.

A GoFundMe account has been set up by the family.
“Hi, my name is Debra Austin, Irma Garcia was my cousin and one of the teachers killed at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas(5/24/2022). Irma was a wife, a mother of 4, a cousin, a sister a daughter, an aunt and a wonderful person. She would literally do anything for anybody……no questions asked. She loved her classroom kids and died trying to protect them. Please donate anything you can to help her family. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Garcia family for various expenses. Thank you and God bless.”
“I am equally devasted to report Irma’s husband Joe has tragically passed away this morning(5/26/2022) as a result of a medical emergency. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life of more than 25 years was too much to bear.”
In another tweet, Martinez responded to the many people expressing support.
although it’s very hard to respond to everyone, i see a lot of your heart warming messages, the overwhelming amount of support means the world and i can’t express it enough. the world needs love and healing right now, so continue to spread it by telling your family you love them

Garcia along with her fellow teacher Eva Mireles selflessly sacrificed themselves in order to save the children,
One unnamed nine-year-old who survived the carnage along with four classmates who hid under a table credited the two teachers with saving his life.
“They were nice teachers,” he said. “They went in front of my classmates to help. To save them.”
