The anti-MAGA wing of the Republican Party could turn to a familiar face to lead their fight against former president Donald J. Trump in 2024 and it may be the man who served under him during his historic four-year term in the White House.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, who has been increasingly critical of Trump after the two men had a public falling out after the 2020 election, traveled to Georgia where he held a rally for Governor Brian Kemp on the eve of the Peach State’s high-stakes Republican primary while the ex-POTUS, who has frequently lashed out at Kemp, held a dueling rally for former Senator David Perdue, his GOP challenger for the governorship.
During his rally in Cobb County, a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, Pence said “When you say yes to Governor Brian Kemp tomorrow, you will send a deafening message all across America that the Republican Party is the party of the future,” a clear jab at Trump.
The fracture between the two Republicans is a result of Pence’s reluctance to challenge the Electoral College certification of the election on January 6, 2021, a day that has since become infamous with Trump continuing to contend that the election results didn’t pass the smell test.
During a call-in to Real America’s Voice’s “Outside the Beltway” on Monday, Trump took a shot at Pence.
“I’m very disappointed in Mike, as a lot of people are, and he just greatly disappointed me. He had a great opportunity, and all he had to do was send it back to the legislatures, let them decide because when you had all of that ammunition, when you had all of those things being said about the election, and you had all the proof Peter Navarro and many others were talking about, it would’ve been very easy to send it back and have them come back.”
“I’m very disappointed at the stance he took,” Trump said.
The former veep was also quoted by The New York Times as saying, “we’ll go where we’re called” when asked about the possibility that he could run against Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential primary and that the devoutly religious Pence and his wife Karen would be guided by prayer.
“That’s the way Karen and I have always approached these things,” he said.

The NYT article also noted that “Pence then unsubtly visited the Charlottesville, Virginia, memorial to Heather Heyer, who was killed in the 2017 white supremacist riot there that Trump sought to rationalize by faulting “both sides,” a reference to the “very fine people” remark by Trump that has been endlessly repeated out of context by media and politicians, including President Joe Biden.
Martin reported that Trump’s team responded by claiming Pence “is desperate to chase his lost relevance.” Martin also laid the case for Pence vs. Trump in a series of tweets.

The New York Times also quotes a statement from Trump through a spokesperson issued prior to Pence’s trip to Georgia to stump for Kemp.
“Mike Pence was set to lose a governor’s race in 2016 before he was plucked up and his political career was salvaged,” said Taylor Budowich. “Now, desperate to chase his lost relevance, Pence is parachuting into races, hoping someone is paying attention. The reality is, President Trump is already 82-3 with his endorsements, and there’s nothing stopping him from saving America in 2022 and beyond.”
