Former Oscars head writer slams ‘woke madness’: ‘They’re so crazed and they’re eating their own’

The former head writer for the Academy Awards addressed the “minefield” that the field of comedy has turned into and “woke madness” the permeates the culture ahead of the Sunday broadcast which he expects to be one of its least viewed ever.

Bruce Vilanch spent 24 years writing for the Oscars including a 14 year stint from 2000-2014 where he helmed the award show. During that time, he worked with the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal and Steve Martin in their capacity as hosts to keep viewers of the annual event tuned in and laughing.

The atmosphere has changed, Vilanch told the Ankler in a special conversation, and the writers this year will be facing unique struggles. Some of them as a consequence from their decisions in previous years.

“The basic landscape is a minefield…comedy generally is where you come out and you don’t know who you’re going to piss off with anything that you say,” Vilanch said of the overall sentiment heading into the event.

He touched on the state of the world including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the waning impacts of the COVID pandemic as topics to tread carefully. On Russian President Vladimir Putin he said, “A lot of people are dead. So I don’t know that you can really joke about Putin. I mean, there might be some oblique jokes.”

Similarly, after witnessing the attendees at previous events that he had written accredit their illness to super-spreader galas, Vilanch suggested COVID still garnered mixed reactions. “There’s a tension in the air because of all these super-spreader events…like BAFTA…I wrote the PGA Award show, and we started out with Ciarán Haines, Jamie Dorman and Kenneth Branagh…and everybody wound up sick.”

The true heart of the problem with comedy came up when Vilanch discussed last year’s Oscars hosted by actress Regina King. As he put it, King “came on and immediately went political. So right away people began tuning out because their worst fear had been realized. It was a bunch of political Hollywood types telling you things you know.”

“It has been quite a year, and we are still smack dab in the middle of it,” King opened. “We are mourning the loss of so many… and I have to be honest, if things had gone differently this past week in Minneapolis, I may have traded in my heels for marching boots.”

That was her reaction to the 2021 verdict of former policie officer Derek Chauvin for his responsibility in the death of George Floyd which led to nationwide protests and riots in 2020. King even openly addressed the distaste the audience would have for her pontificating.

“Now, I know a lot of you people at home want to reach for your remotes and you feel like Hollywood is preaching to you,” she continued. “But as a mother of a black son, I know the fear that so many live with, and no amount of fame or fortune changes that. Ok?”

While her remarks were part of the production, others came out and preached as well. Actor and director Tyler Perry spoke on the nature of hate and explained, “My mother taught me to refuse hate…just refuse hate. Don’t hate anybody.”

Travon Free, co-director of the film “Two Distant Strangers” took a direct approach in his woke acceptance speech stating, “Today, the police will kill 3 people,” and so on, every day he claimed before later adding, “Please don’t be indifferent to our pain.”

Vilanch opined on this and other issues that fall into the category of “woke” and how harping on them and ascribing to these beliefs is, interestingly enough, destroying the leftist activists. “The latest wrinkle,” he said, “is the woke madness…they’re so crazed and they’re eating their own, you know, they’re just eating their young and nuts. It’s just nuts.”

The 94th Academy Awards are being hosted by Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall. This honor, Vilanch said in anticipation of the “second-lowest broadcast ever”, is one no one wants. “If you’re big enough to be considered to host,” he stated, “you don’t need it.”
