California broke progressive new ground recently, with the first openly transgender judge to be appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the second to serve in the state.
Andi Mudryk, 58, was the Chief Deputy Director at California’s Department of Rehabilitation. Now, however, as per Newsom’s appointment, Mudryk will instead serve on the Sacramento County Superior Court.
This will be the second transgender judge in California, the first being Alameda Superior Court Judge Victoria Kolakowski, who was elected to the position in 2010.
“I’m humbled, honored and I’m thrilled. I’m grateful to Governor Newsom for creating a vision of California for all,” Mudryk told the Los Angeles Times.
Kolakowski got on Twitter to show support for Mudryk, saying how pleased he is at having a second transgender judge in California:

Other progressive gay rights organizations were full of praise as well, such as Tony Hoang, Executive Director of Equality California, had the following to say, reported the Daily Mail:
“As governors and state legislatures across the country attack the trans community, we applaud Gov. Newsom’s continued commitment to increasing trans representation. California continues to remind the rest of the country that LGBTQ+ voices are essential to achieve full equality.”
Leah Wilson, another gay rights organizer in California, agreed in a statement of her own:
“The values of diversity, equity and inclusion are fundamental to the State Bar’s mission, and I thank our Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation for their important work, and I applaud Gov. Newsom on his commitment to a diverse judiciary. Superior Court Judge Andi Mudryk’s appointment is a touchstone moment in California history that will lead to more opportunities for transgender people throughout the legal profession.”
Mudryk’s legal career originally started in private practices after obtaining a law degree from George Washington University, and thereafter spent 11 years working for Disability Rights California, rotating through various managerial positions with that organization before moving on to the Department of Rehabilitation. Four years ago, Mudryk began transitioning to a woman.
As Hoang noted, not everyone is an enthusiastic supporter of transgender ideology. Utah became the most recent state to ban transgender athletes from playing on female teams last Friday, making it the 12th state to do so after its legislators were able to override the veto of Governor Spencer Cox.
In Florida, the colloquially named “Don’t Say Gay” bill has generated a firestorm of controversy, yet another flashpoint in the ongoing culture wars, which have also reached into the Supreme Court of the United States, as President Joe Biden’s nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson refused to answer Senator Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) question on how she defines what a woman is.
In California however, there is no question that transgender ideology is ascendant in the state.
