“Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ estate attorney Brian Panish slammed a shameless Alec Baldwin after shocking court documents revealed on Friday that he despicably seemed to blame his victim for her tragic death, claiming she told him to cock the gun that killed her.
Writer Maureen Callahan at the New York Post summarized Baldwin’s defensive claims.
“In jaw-dropping court documents filed on Friday morning, Baldwin says she’s the one that asked the gun be pointed at her; that the production was a smooth, well-oiled machine; that her widower, Matthew, has inexplicably gone from amenable to vengeful — and oh, how confusing and upsetting this is to Baldwin; and that hey, no matter what, Baldwin’s contract indemnifies him for any damages,” she wrote in the opinion piece published Friday.
She snarked that the $1.75 million Vermont farmhouse that Baldwin just purchased must be what his attention is on. She also took a swing at him for being so arrogantly delusional that he actually believed Matthew Hutchins would not sue him. In fact, the actor is facing multiple lawsuits.
“I would never point a gun at anyone,” Baldwin had proclaimed to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “and pull the trigger at them. Never.”

And yet, he now contradicted himself claiming that it was Hutchins who told him to point the gun at her. Page 20 of the court filing shared by Deadline, stated, “She [Hutchins] directed Baldwin to hold the gun higher, to a point where it was directed toward her.”
Callahan could not repress her disgust, writing, “Alec Baldwin is a liar and a coward. Blaming the dead — how unspeakably reptilian. Baldwin also claims that it was Hutchins who directed him to pull back the hammer on the gun.”
Far from the well-oiled machine that Baldwin claimed the film was, it seemed actually a tragedy waiting to happen. The LA Times reported that there had been no less than three accidental shootings on the set before Hutchins was killed. The outlet also reported on a lack of safety protocols and a penchant for cutting corners as well as an inexperienced armorer and an overworked crew. Six of the crew walked off the set the morning that Hutchins was shot due to unsafe conditions.
“The gun used by Baldwin,” the filing reads, “discharged a live round.”
“Yes, an inanimate object pointed itself and ‘discharged’ — such a softer verb than ‘fired’ — the bullet that killed a young wife and mother,” Callahan caustically commented.

“I’m not aware of any gun firing itself … If this becomes an acceptable defense, there goes any accountability when it comes to shooting people. We can’t have this kind of ‘guns shoot themselves’ thing. They don’t,” Hollywood firearms and special effects expert Steve Wolf noted in December, according to the New York Post.
“October 21 has become the worst day in the lives of the Hutchins family … It does not diminish that loss to say that October 21 was also the worst day of Alec Baldwin’s life,” the filing reads, attempting to make Baldwin the real victim in all of this, exploring his so-called trauma.
“The facts make clear that Baldwin is not culpable for these events or failures,” the filing laughably asserts.
The actor’s attorney argued, “An actor cannot rule that a gun is safe. That is the responsibility of other people on set.”

Actor George Clooney on Marc Maron’s podcast said the exact opposite: “Every single time I’m handed a gun on the set — every time they hand me a gun — I look at it, I open it, I show it to the person I’m pointing it to, I show it to the crew. Every single take.”
“In industry jargon,” the filing adds, elaborating on Baldwin being told it was a “cold gun,” “with which Mr. Baldwin was well familiar after working as an actor for 42 years, that meant the pistol contained either nothing or only ‘dummy’ rounds.”
“I’ve never heard the term ‘cold gun,’” Clooney stated during his interview. “I’ve never heard that term. Literally. They’re just talking about stuff I’ve never heard of. It’s just infuriating.”
Callahan went on to rip both Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria over their elitist attitudes after the shooting and the actor’s continuous denial that any of it was his fault.
“Or maybe it’s his current tagline on Instagram: ‘Spare me your advice and judgments …’ I s—t you not,” she said, dripping contempt for Baldwin.
“Then again, never underestimate a malignant narcissist. Baldwin, don’t you know, made real sacrifices after he killed Halyna Hutchins,” she sarcastically noted.
Alec Baldwin shot and killed a woman on a set he was 💯 responsible for. He exacerbated the situation with a series of ridiculous and conflicting statement, tweets, interviews and aggressive, threatening interactions with reporters.

“In the days following the tragedy,” the filing contended, “Baldwin was in shock and anguish over the events and desperately wished to return home to his family.”
“However,” it continued, “he remained in New Mexico to honor Hutchins at an impromptu memorial and to meet with her husband, Matthew Hutchins, and their son, Andros Hutchins, who traveled from California to New Mexico shortly after her death.”
She pointed out that Matthew Hutchins, the widower of the victim, is justified in his anger towards Baldwin and it is little wonder he is suing.
“The idea that the person holding the gun and causing it to discharge is not responsible is absurd to me,” Hutchins angrily told Today in an interview.
“I was just so angry to see him talk about her death so publicly in such a detailed way,” Hutchins admitted. He was disgusted by Baldwin’s victim-blaming and crocodile tears.
“He said essentially he felt grief but no guilt. Almost sounds like he was the victim,” Hutchins charged. “And hearing him blame Halyna in the interview and shift responsibility to others and seeing him cry about it — I just feel, are we really supposed to feel bad about you, Mr. Baldwin?”

“Based on this court filing, Mr. Baldwin would say yes. But that will never happen, not even if Baldwin loses everything,” Callahan wrote.
“So please, Alec, keep talking. Keep playing the victim. Keep making yourself radioactive in Hollywood. And keep leaving zero doubt that Matthew Hutchins and his little boy deserve everything Matthew sues you for — and more,” she concluded.
