Hulking bully who brutalized SC middle schooler in viral video to face charges: ‘Something’s got to give’

A South Carolina middle schooler is facing charges after a video that captured her vicious assault on a fellow student went viral on social media where it generated shock and outrage.

In the video, the victim has her hair grabbed by a much larger girl who throws her to the floor and then after she gets up, violently strikes her again, causing the smaller child to fall down where she lays as the hulking bully berates her with threatening language, “You don’t like it when people do that to you, right? You wouldn’t like it, right? So don’t do it again.”

For good measure the larger girl delivers a kick to the fallen student, taunting her with “I will hurt you” and “stomp your b*tch-assed face in” before allowing her to get up.

“You can go, bye,” the much larger girl says as the smaller student stands up and flees for safety.

 

The incident went down on Thursday in the girl’s locker room at Lady’s Island Middle School in Beaufort, SC  where it was filmed by another student using Snapchat and later posted to both Facebook and Instagram, the video was also posted to Twitter.

Local media which identified both girls as sixth graders reported that police will be “filing charges of third-degree assault and battery and student threats against one of the students.”

According to Savannah NBC affiliate WSAV, a police officer said “it appears the student hit her head on a concrete wall and her arm on a wooden bench as she fell to the ground.”

WSAV also cites the police report, “detailed conversations between the officer and both of the students involved in the fight. One of the students told the officer that the day prior to the physical fight, the girls got into a verbal argument calling each other slow walkers as they were heading to class” and that while the students’ names are redacted, “it appears the next day, one of the students pulled the other’s hair at the end of a dance class. The student “stated that [made] her really mad and that’s when they started to fight,”

The parents of the victim have retained an attorney and are “pursuing charges to the fullest extent” WSAV reported that a family member told the outlet.

Many reports describe the incident as a “fight” but the video clearly shows that is a misrepresentation and that it was a beatdown, media also fails to mention that the victim was white and her attacker was black, some on Twitter have suggested that it should be treated as a hate crime.

Other Twitter users expressed their outrage over the assault – Caution: Adult Language.

A report by The Island Packet provides additional details and that the uncle of the victim, Sean Apgar “said he believed it stemmed from the other student being removed from a Snapchat group that his niece was a part of.”

“The next day, the other student asked his niece to meet her after class because she wanted to “show her something,” and what followed is the bullying seen in the video, he said. He wasn’t sure who took the video, but said that the student’s parents saw it on social media and realized it was their daughter being pushed,” the newspaper reported.

“Obviously the (other) parents need to be held more accountable, the school needs to be held more accountable,” Apgar said Friday, according to the Island Packet, adding that his own children have been bullied in Beaufort County School District.

“Something’s got to give. We can’t keep saying, ‘Oh, this kid’s been bullied, we’re looking into this situation,’ and you get no response back,” he said.

“Candace Bruder, the spokesperson for the school district, said Friday that Beaufort Police Department had opened an investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson George Erdel said the suspect will be petitioned to Family Court,” the outlet reported.
