Cracker Barrel worker, grandmother of 3, killed in robbery trying to protect co-workers

An armed robber allegedly killed a 59-year-old Houston-area Cracker Barrel manager as she fought to save her employee’s life early Saturday morning.

As reported by KHOU-11, Robin Baucom, mother of three and grandmother of three, was already in the North Freeway store when one of her employees arrived for work around 6:15 a.m. As the employee was ringing the bell to gain entrance, a silver Dodge Charger pulled up and a man got out of the passenger side to ask if the restaurant was open. He then allegedly grabbed for the employee’s purse.

By this time, Baucom had gotten to the front door to let the employee inside; she attempted to push the door closed again to prevent the intruder from entering, but he overpowered her, firing one shot into her chest.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and Harris County Precinct 4 Constables, the victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery but died soon thereafter.

During a Sunday candlelight vigil in the restaurant parking lot, Baucom’s daughter Tina told ABC13, “She was a fireball. You don’t mess with her or hers. And these employees and her family were hers. She would have done anything in the world to protect any one of her employees or any one of us.”

Baucom’s sister Gail added, “It was such a senseless way for her to lose her life. She was just trying to go to work to make a living.”

Baucom was a 34-year veteran of the Cracker Barrel store.

“When I was starting kindergarten, she started at Cracker Barrel part-time. She would buy me back-to-school clothes. It was supposed to be a couple of months. Thirty-four years later, a heartache, and here we are,” her daughter Tina recalled.

Regular customers attended the vigil, as well, and had fond remembrances of her. Angelia Richmond, a Cracker Barrel patron for 18 years, said, “It didn’t matter who you were, she made sure you were taken care of. She stood out. Not only that, she remembered your name.”

Cracker Barrel released this statement on Saturday:

“We can confirm that there was a criminal shooting at our Houston store on North Freeway prior to opening this morning which resulted in our store’s associate manager sustaining fatal injuries as she protected other employees from harm. All of Cracker Barrel is solely focused on supporting our manager’s family, her fellow employees, and local law enforcement as we grapple with this tragedy and grieve.”

Deputies are still searching for the shooter and his accomplice, as well as the gray Dodge Charger they drove away in. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
