Public marriage proposals can go one of two ways – just like intimate marriage proposals. But, public proposals place a lot more pressure on the ring bearer to get it right, and even more pressure on the recipient to say “yes.”

During Monday night’s NBA game between the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Hornets, dancer Danielle Bush received what is likely the surprise of a lifetime when her boyfriend Brandon pulled off a stunt that may have ruined it for anyone seeking the fanfare of a public proposal.

It was halftime and the Utah Jazz Dancers were performing their routine with Bush at the center of the ensemble. Suddenly, the music changed – with scratched record effect – to the complete surprise of Bush, as the dance troupe continued on with choreography she clearly had not rehearsed with them.

She kept smiling and tried her best to sync up with the other dancers – who were now moving to Bruno Mars’ 2011 hit, “Marry You” – finally realizing what was happening as her boyfriend strolled onto center court and dropped to one knee.

Full of surprise and overwhelmed by the moment, Bush finally composed herself and appears to have happily accepted Brandon’s proposal and the accompanying engagement ring. The dancers and fans all erupted in cheers and applause for the newly-engaged couple.

The Utah Jazz dancers congratulated the happy couple on their Instagram page after the game, writing, “What a night! Congratulations Danielle and Brandon! We loved sharing this moment with you.”

The wholesome trickery of the proposal was coordinated by Jazz Dance Team Director Ashley Kelson, Senior Director of Entertainment Payden Adams and Bush’s fellow Jazz dancers. Adams posted his congratulations on social media, writing, “She had no idea what was coming!!! The proposal at our game tonight reminds me why I do what I do – Def one of my favs so far. Spread love and joy people.”

Marriage proposals that are planned for large sporting venues don’t always go off without a hitch, however.

At Sunday’s NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and NY Jets, a Dolphins fan missed his own proposal when a picture of the couple and the all-important question lit up the Hard Rock Stadium jumbotron. But, the would-be fiancé wasn’t in his seat.

“So they just did a scoreboard proposal here at Hard Rock. However, when they cut away from this graphic to where the two are supposed to be sitting, the guy wasn’t there!” Connor Hughes of The Athletic tweeted Sunday. “Just the girl, sitting there, hand over mouth! Dude must have been in the concession line lol.”

All seems to have ended well, however, and the minor blunder will probably be a conversation starter for many years to come.

“The guy returned to his seat several minutes later. They cut back to the two. The girl had the ring on her finger. They were talking,” Hughes recounted.

In terms of the newly-engaged Utah couple, one YouTube commentator humorously quipped, “Congratulations to the couple. It’s ironic to know that she got a ring BEFORE the Jazz did. Sweet and Savage. I love it.”
