U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), a self-described capitalist, claims that he was unaware that an event he attended earlier this month was linked to the Communist Party.
Blumenthal was “a very special surprise guest” at the Amsted Awards at a New Haven Church on December 11. The Connecticut Peoples World Committee, which hosts the annual event, is reportedly affiliated with the Communist Party USA.
“My understanding was that this ceremony was strictly a labor event,” Blumenthal told the Hartford Courant. “If I had known the details, I wouldn’t have gone…Let me just say very emphatically, I’m a Democrat and a strong believer in American capitalism. I have been consistently a Democrat and a strong supporter and believer in American capitalism.’’
Blumenthal has an estimated net worth of $100 million.
Immediately before Blumenthal took the podium, a video clip of the event appears to show one of the emcees saying that “this is a beautiful tribute from all of our labor leaders honoring how important the Communist Party is in our movement, not just in Connecticut but across the whole world.”

Watch this and tell me how shameless Blumenthal has to be to claim he didn't know he was speaking at a Communist-affiliated event. https://t.co/AoUL35vwQH

During his speech which he talked, in part, about the importance of the economic equity agenda and electing more Democrats in 2022, Blumenthal said he was “really excited and honored” to be able to “share this remarkable occasion.” He presented each honoree with a certificate of special recognition from the U.S. Senate. He also touted the Biden administration’s proposed massive spending spree known as the Build Back Better legislation.
The senator added that he goes where he is invited, and this controversy is just a distraction from his priorities. “I go to a lot of events, places, meetings, rallies, and ceremonies in Connecticut. I’m delighted to be invited anywhere, and in this instance, I was invited by local labor unions to honor these three individuals, and that’s why I was there. That’s pretty much it.’’
“People are going to do what they’re going to do. I’m just going to keep doing my job for the people of Connecticut. There’s a lot at stake in the Senate right now — voting rights, the ongoing pandemic, making childcare affordable, lowering prescription drug prices. That’s where my focus is.’’
The longtime state attorney general, Blumenthal, 75, managed to win election to the U.S. Senate in 2010, running against the “wrestling lady,” GOP standard-bearer Linda McMahon (who later headed the Small Business Administration under President Trump) despite making up a story that he served in Vietnam when he was in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves. He was reelected in 2016 in the blue state.
“The difference between communists and Blumenthal is that communists actually fought in Vietnam,” ex-Navy Seal Robert O’Neill quipped on social media.
“My father was held captive and tortured by the communist regime in Cuba. It is INSANE to watch politicians in our country embrace the ideology that caused millions across the world to pay a heavy price. This is un-American and disqualifying Sen. Blumenthal,” conservative activist Mercedes Schlapp declared. “Sen. Richard Blumenthal’s attendance at the Connecticut Communist Party Awards Celebration is a new low for the Big Government Socialists,” former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich observed.
“This is how far left and radical today’s Democrat Party has gone,’’ asserted National Republican Senatorial Committee spokeswoman Lizzie Litzow.
Other luminaries are weighing in:
Taking a deserved shot at Sen. Blumenthal (who repeatedly lied about serving in Vietnam) over the Communist event he attended, while also getting a laugh from @larry_kudlow & @KatiePavlich is a win, imo. pic.twitter.com/OpWVJUFylF

What’s not getting enough attention…
Democrat Sen. Richard Blumenthal spoke at an awards ceremony hosted by an affiliate of the Communist Party.

If Democrats don't care that their own leaders like Sen. Blumenthal are speaking at Communist Party-affiliated award ceremonies, then you don't have a party that believes in the Bill of Rights. pic.twitter.com/2oYkwigNbS
