New York Attorney General Letitia James says she is not interested in being nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court but she knows who should be.

And the name she floated to fill a potential open seat on the nation’s highest court appeared to surprise even the woman herself, Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

James revealed her stance on a Supreme Court nomination during an appearance on ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday. The New York AG explained that she has “unfinished business” in her role and opted to run for re-election, dropping her gubernatorial bid in an effort to unseat Gov. Kathy Hochul a few days earlier.

Guest host Amanda Carpenter asked James about the high court nomination, recounting how, during the 2020 presidential race, Joe Biden had pledged that if a seat opened on the Supreme Court, he would nominate a black woman.

Responding to Carpenter’s question about whether she would be interested in being that nominee, James said “no.”

“I would recommend Sherrilyn Ifill, the counsel for the NAACP,” she continued. “She’s a brilliant woman, and she deserves that seat.”

Ifill certainly seemed surprised by the recommendation, reacting to a tweet about the comments made by James.

“Whaat?” she wrote.

Pressed by “The View” host Joy Behar about whether she would change her mind if Ifill turned down a nomination, James still said no, adding, “I am someone who likes talking, and dealing with the public, being on the ground.”

“You know, it would really be nice to see you as one of the higher court judges, but I just feel like this is your spot,” host Whoopi Goldberg said. “This is where you belong, and thank God for you.”

“Listen, Justice Sonia Sotomayor got it right. The stench right now — no,” James said, referring to comments by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

“I’d rather be organizing New York and other states. I’d rather be turning red to blue. I’d rather be talking about the issues,” she added.

Meanwhile, Ifill later expressed her thanks to James in another tweet.
