Now that the verdict is in and Jussie Smollett has been found guilty for his role in orchestrating a hate crime hoax that he blamed on supporters of former President Donald J. Trump, those who were involved in the incident that was exploited by top Democrats are offering up their perspectives.

One of those who weighed in was Eddie Johnson, the man who headed up the Chicago Police Department at the time that the actor perpetrated his scam and who immediately smelled a rat due to suspicious inconsistencies, one of which was the “noose” that Smollett left hanging around his neck after he returned to his apartment following the alleged beating on a frigid winter night.

During a Friday interview on NewsNation’s “Morning In America” with host Adrienne Bankert, the Windy City’s former top cop dished the details and said that Smollett likely would not have been charged had he just admitted to his racially-charged trickery and apologized.

According to Johnson, “When I initially saw the video of him in his apartment with the noose around his neck, I was concerned, because I don’t think there are many black people in America that would have a noose around their neck, and wouldn’t immediately take it off,” he said, “and then the way he was so nonchalant, handling, it gave me pause for concern, you know, but I would not let the police department make him an offender until the evidence just got to be so overwhelming.”

“I stopped the department from calling him an offender for quite a while but I have to say, to use a symbol like a noose to promote yourself is just unconscionable to me.” He said, citing the progress that the city had made on violent crime and that it hurt him that a black person would resort to using the rope as a prop.

The former police superintendent also divulged a key aspect in the Smollett incident that raised suspicion – his Subway sandwich.

“What really struck us all is the fact that he got attacked on the coldest night of the year during a polar vortex,” noting that nobody was out in such harsh conditions.

“He went to a Subway sandwich shop at like two in the morning to get a sandwich, ok, that’s fine.” Johnson said,

“He comes back, gets attacked in a hate crime, supposed hate crime, and during all this scuffle, they poured bleach on him and all of this,” he continued, “when he got up and went into his apartment building, he still had his Subway sandwich with him.”

“Well, that doesn’t happen.” He said, When people get attacked like that whatever belongings they have out there, they usually leave it until the police can go back with them because they’re afraid, this guy had the sandwich in his hand and never been touched.”

Johnson emphasized that despite the red flags that he still persisted in respecting the “Empire” star by treating him as a victim until further evidence including surveillance video and the two Nigerian brothers who blew the case wide open when they fessed up that they had been paid by Smollett made it obvious that something was amiss and that he could no longer protect the actor.

However, despite the ordeal, Johnson said that Smollett would have still had an out had he chosen to take it.

‘Let me say this, myself and Mayor Emanuel were upset at the time that you stained our city and you put all that manpower into it, but I want people to understand this too,” he said, “this wasn’t the most heinous crime of the century, he didn’t kill anybody, he didn’t blow up a building.”

“We would have been more than happy with just an apology at the end of all that we uncovered but for some reason, he just wanted to keep going down this road that he was actually a victim,” he said.

Johnson also remarked that he was “pleased” with the verdict and the jurors and that he felt that justice had been done.

Smollett’s attorneys have announced their intention to appeal the verdict despite the fact that it is now brutally obvious the vast majority of observers that he and his enablers lied about it all.
