With the trial of former police officer Kim Potter underway, where she faces first- and second-degree manslaughter charges for shooting and killing Daunte Wright, previous victims of the troubled young man have been very vocal.

Wright, 20, was killed when Potter reportedly mistook her handgun for a Taser when Wright broke free from another officer during an arrest attempt earlier this year and got back into his vehicle. She is heard in bodycam footage shouting “Taser” before a shot rings out.

In what is described as a victim impact statement she never got to read to Wright, a woman who asked to remain anonymous shared her thoughts with Fox News Digital — the woman said she was robbed at gunpoint by Wright, who choked her. She described the crime as a nightmare, where she tried to scream but there was no sound coming out.

“I did not feel safe living in my own apartment,” she said. “I felt completely violated and disrespected on a whole nother level.”

The woman told Fox News that Wright “was evil, and he didn’t care about me in that moment,” adding that she was traumatized by the incident and loses sleep from having flashbacks in her dreams.

“I had never stared into somebody’s eyes while begging to keep my life, while also having a gun pointed at my head,” she said. “I have never gasped for air as much as I did when I had his hands wrapped around my neck.”

A high school acquaintance named Emajay Driver brought Wright over to the victim’s apartment in Dec. 2019, and they hung out, drank and smoked marijuana, according to Fox News, which reported that the next  morning Wright “allegedly shoved a pistol in her face, choked her and tried to steal $820 she was supposed to give to her landlord for rent.”

“I believe that both of these men deserve time in prison, probation after prison for this crime to be on their permanent records, mandatory psychiatric evaluations, anger management classes, chemical dependency classes and treatment and domestic violence classes,” she said. “The acts of crime they committed towards me. I feel they are a danger to society and will continue to do the same things to other people if they’re not punished for their crimes.”

As noted by the network, Driver was sentenced to three years probation after he pleaded guilty in Dec. 2020, with the woman suggesting he got a lenient sentence by agreeing to testify against Wright, who died before his case came to trial. Fox News said the terms of the plea deal are not publicly available, but the crime carried a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Driver was seen outside the Hennepin County Courthouse in downtown Minneapolis with Wright’s family and civil rights attorney Ben Crump on Wednesday, the first day of Potter’s trial.

In a separate report, Fox News Digital reported that Wright “left behind a trail of victims whose lives he upended with gun violence of his own.”

Two such women had little sympathy for him, saying individually, “Karma’s a b—-.

Another casualty of the violence was Caleb Livingston, whom Wright allegedly shot in the head at a Minneapolis gas station. Only 16 at the time, Livingston wasn’t expected to survive surgery, according to his mother. And while he did pull through, he cannot walk or talk and must have 24-hour care.

“I pray for everybody involved because there’s a loss of life,” his mother, Jennifer LeMay, said. “I know what [Wright’s] parents are going through because I almost lost my son…Now, who [Wright] was before he was killed, it is what it is.”

Potter’s legal team insists that the former officer meant to draw her Taser and shot Wright with her gun by accident.

“The State can’t prove any offense by playing the video, which shows an accident,” attorney Paul Engh wrote in a court filing ahead of the trial, according to Fox News. “The prosecution can’t win on Officer Potter’s shouts of ‘Taser, Taser, Taser,’ words meaning she was going to use her TASER, so as to not harm Mr. Wright. Nor for reasons of her enormous after-the-fact regret of what could not have been a conscious act.”

Immediately after the shooting, Potter was heard on camera saying, “Oh my God, oh my God, I shot him.”
