Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie claims “it’s undeniable” that former President Donald Trump infected him with COVID-19 last year while also lambasting Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows during a PBS interview.
Speaking with PBS “Firing Line” host Margaret Hoover, Christie contended that Meadows should have told him last September that the president had tested positive for COVID-19. The former governor and GOP politician said that a section in Meadow’s new memoir, “The Chief’s Chief,” due to be released next week, admits that Trump was likely infected at least several days before the White House announced the president was being briefly hospitalized for the coronavirus.
According to a USA Today news story from October 2020, in the six days between testing positive and being admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, the president “debated Joe Biden, introduced his nominee to the Supreme Court, attended two fundraisers, and exhorted an estimated 5,000 people at two campaign rallies.” He also spent several days closeted with Christie, preparing for the presidential debate.
Christie was admitted to a hospital on Oct. 3, three days after that debate. The former governor was far more ill than the president. He was in intensive care for a week fighting the disease. At times, he says, his very survival was touch-and-go.
NEW: @GovChristie says it’s “inexcusable” Mark Meadows didn’t reveal President Trump’s positive COVID test during debate prep and “saved it for a book.”
So does Christie, who spent a week in intensive care with the virus, believe Trump infected him?

Christie said he learned of the president’s earlier positive test only when a section in Meadows’ book revealed the chief of staff had been aware that Trump might have been infected a week before he was briefly hospitalized. Christie slammed Meadows for saving that vital information for the book instead of alerting people at the time.
When asked during his interview with Hoover whether the president should have told him he had a positive test, Christie responded by castigating Meadows.
“Well that’s obvious, of course, Trump should’ve told all of us…Mark should’ve said to all of us, ‘Hey the president tested positive for COVID, we’re having another test.’ The next test came back negative from what he reported.
“He had an obligation to tell us. To tell us that, ‘Hey, he tested positive.’ I would’ve worn a mask if I knew that. We knew everybody in that room except for the president was getting tested every day. We didn’t know what the president’s testing regimen was,” Christie continued.
“So, if Mark Meadows knew that somebody that I was sitting across from for four days had popped a positive test, he, as the White House Chief of Staff — put aside the president for a second, obviously the president is my friend — should’ve looked at me and told me that. That’s obvious.”
Christie reiterated that Meadows’ decision to remain silent was simply “inexcusable.”
“But I think what’s less obvious is that Mark Meadows saved this for his book. He saved it for a book. He didn’t tell us,” he said. “I went into the hospital in the intensive care unit. He didn’t call and tell me. So I think that’s inexcusable.”
Hoover pressed Christie, seeming to be pushing the connection to Trump by asking if he “had always suspected” that he got COVID-19 from the then-president.
“The only reason I suspected it was because he was the only person who I didn’t know his testing regimen that I was in close contact with,” Christie responded.
“So did this confirm for you that you did in fact get it from the president?” Hoover then asked.
“Oh, I think it’s undeniable,” Christie asserted.
