In the opening monologue of his CBS television program on Wednesday night, Stephen Colbert perhaps seemed to smugly take some delight in the news that the 50-foot Fox News Christmas Tree was torched, but Greg Gutfeld fired back with an epic burn.
“And it’s already beating you in the ratings,” Gutfeld quipped to his 1.6 million Twitter followers in direct response to Colbert’s social media message that “Flaming Christmas Tree just got its own show on Fox News!”
Although viewership has fluctuated, Gutfeld’s eponymous show has, at times, outpaced all of the traditional late-night variety shows which trend left on the alphabet networks.
“The Christmas lights are burning bright especially over at Fox News headquarters, where last night the Fox News Christmas tree was set on fire…thankfully, no one was hurt…Of course, this would never have happened if the tree had a gun,” Colbert said at the beginning of the riff to a typically approving liberal audience.
Primarily mocking the Fox & Friends crew, Colbert — who has become more of a liberal activist than an entertainment show emcee or a comedian — broke into a cringy parody of “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas.”
“It’s beginning to look a lot like arson, everywhere you go,” he sang. “Take a look at the tree and then, the flames are roaring once again, [Steve] Doocy, stop, drop, roll.”

In her Daily Mail column, former NYC resident Meghan McCain opined generally about the reaction on liberal Twitter that “It is also interesting to note how so many people seemed to take extra enjoyment from knowing it was the Fox News Christmas tree. Even the New York Times headline said ‘Fox News Christmas Tree Catches Fire in Manhattan,’ like it somehow spontaneously combusted. It reminds me of the ‘mostly peaceful’ protesting headlines and chyrons on cable news while entire buildings were set in flames behind broadcasters last summer.”
Owing to New York’s catch-and-release, so-called bail reform policy, a suspect who has proclaimed his innocence was set free after his arrangement less than 24-hours after the incident, which reportedly caused about $500,000 in damages outside of Fox News’ midtown-Manhattan studios.

Mentioning that the cops believe that the suspect is homeless, and mental challenges may have been a factor, Colbert quipped, “homeless and mentally ill? Oh my God — the fire was set by Bill O’Reilly.”
Colbert basically owes his career to caricaturing Bill O’Reilly, however.
Other than Colbert sycophants, many social media users appear to be on Team Greg, though.
I would rather watch the Christmas tree than watch Colbert

All humor aside, how low class is it for Colbert to make a joke about yet another round of destruction in NYC?
They apparently have sparedColbert’s neighborhood…..so far.— PardonMyFrench (@1PardonMyFrench) December 9, 2021
Oh the left says, the tree caught fire by itself. Just like the gun that shoots itself!!!! Build Back Christmas Trees!

I’d watch paint dry before I’d watch Steven Colbert’s show.

Glad to see arson is hilarious. So respectful to The Holidays The next time I laugh at one of your jokes will be the first @StephenAtHome

Tell him Gregg. Maybe he can get a view more viewers if he does his COVID dance. BTW the man who burned down the tree could have killed people so the tree deserves a show.

— Gerard Farrell (@GerardFarrell67) December 9, 2021
Colbert has no news of his own, so he watches Fox all day long to get his material.
