A non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of Native Americans wants Fox News to sack hosts Jesse Watters and Rachel Campos-Duffy over remarks about indigenous people the group considers “racist.”
The anger comes from a recent “Fox News Primetime” segment in which Watters and Duffy discussed comments from Vice President Kamala Harris during the Columbus Day observation this month in which she told Native Americans that others should acknowledge the impacts Christopher Columbus and other European explorers had on their nations.
“We must not shy away from this shameful past,” Harris said in a clip that Watters included at the start of the segment, after playing a 2008 clip of Michelle Obama shortly after her husband won the Democratic presidential nomination when she said it was the first time in her life she was “proud” of the country.
Watters went on to summarize Harris by saying she and other Democrats praise the country when they are on top politically, but when they are not “winning,” they characterize the country as “a horrible place. “He also said that when “you read any textbook, you watch any film, you go to any library, yes, it’s taught that Americans did conquer and commit violence in the way that they came across this continent and founded this country,” before swinging it over to Campos-Duffy, who appeared with her husband, former Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.).
“Christopher Columbus, by the way, is the first victim of cancel culture,” Campos-Duffy responded, adding: “That was by design. Howard Zinn, the Marxist who wrote A People’s History, this new Marxist revisionist textbook that all of our high school kids and college kids are getting their history from.”
She went on to say that Native Americans, by comparison, aren’t being held to “the same standard” as European explorers and settlers like Columbus.
“We know that they were just as brutal, we know they actually had slaves, including African-American slaves, they conquered tribes before and after Columbus came,” Campos-Duffy said, going on to argue that social conditions at present for Native Americans “have everything to do with government dependency, cycles of poverty and alcoholism, and family breakdowns,” adding that she has seen the problems first-hand among members of her own family.
“These are all things Democrats don’t want to talk about,” she added.
The segment was noted by IllumiNative, an organization that describes itself as “a new nonprofit initiative designed to increase the visibility of – and challenge the negative narrative about – Native Nations and peoples in American society.”
Crystal Echo Hawk, in an interview with The Daily Beast, railed against the comments she claims were “outrageously false and harmful statements about Native Americans.”

“This rhetoric is incredibly harmful and dangerous and very clearly rooted in racism and white supremacy. Instead of allowing people to perpetuate revisionist history that erases the true history of this country—we need to start calling it what it was. Genocide,” Echo Hawk said.
“There should not be a television network in the United States that allows people like Jesse Watters, Rachel Campos-Duffy, and Sean Duffy to disseminate hate and indoctrinate this country with racism and white supremacy,” Echo Hawk added.
