Sometimes, albeit very rarely, political correctness and identity politics engender serendipitous results.
According to conservatives, such is the case with what happened Saturday with the Women’s March, the pro-abortion extremist group known for protesting Republicans, particularly former President Donald Trump, by decking women out in outfits from “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
“The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dystopian TV series about a world in which women essentially have no rights. Convinced that Trump was intent on making the fictional world a reality, members and supporters of the Women’s March began parading around in handmaiden outfits during his presidency.
It started with signs on the literal day that Trump was inaugurated but quickly progressed into full-blown outfits.

Returning to the present, the Women’s March scheduled nationwide protests for this Saturday to protest a recent crop of pro-life legislation, particularly the heartbeat bill in Texas. But this time, there was a catch.
In a stunning tweet posted early Saturday morning, the movement’s official Twitter account admonished its own members for wearing outfits from “The Handmaid’s Tale” because it’s apparently racist.
Look:
Handmaid’s Tale imagery has proliferated, primarily by white women, in recent years. This message erases the fact that Black, undocumented, incarcerated, poor, & disabled women have always had their reproduction controlled in America. It’s not some dystopian future or past.

“Handmaid’s Tale imagery has proliferated, primarily by white women, in recent years. This message erases the fact that Black, undocumented, incarcerated, poor, & disabled women have always had their reproduction controlled in America. It’s not some dystopian future or past,” the account wrote.
In other words, the Women’s March has banned the use of handmaid outfits because political correctness has reached the point where now virtually everything is racist.
Excited by the Women’s March cancelling “The Handmaid’s Tale” outfits, conservatives jumped at the opportunity to use the same illogical political correctness and identity politics to encourage the group to go ahead and cancel itself next.
Look:
What a transphobic user name, handle name, and tweet. Full of hatred towards transgender people.

You should change your name. Men need abortions too. The name “Women’s March” is transphobic and othering.

“Women’s” March?!
Isn’t this transphobic af?

Why are you ignoring the plight of other uterus-possessing bodies? This is bigoted stuff.
— El Capitan ‘Murica (@ElCapitanMurica) October 3, 2021
Your twitter handle is bigoted. Women are no different than men… fix it.

Conservatives also slammed the Women’s March for suggesting contemporary women are somehow being subjugated and that America is itself a dystopia.
There is an incredible disconnect between the millions of women that desperately want to come here from other countries (almost all of which have harsher abortion laws btw) and this constant portrayal by some of us as a dystopian society. https://t.co/mqaTwr0VGN

Last but not least, a range of critics — some of them possibly liberal — excoriated the group for once again throwing white women under the bus.
Look:
Handmaid’s Tale was written by a white woman, apparently the Women’s March hates white people but white women are women too.
— Saladin Khan (@MC_Sadist) October 3, 2021
Misogyny even if directed just at white women by women is still Misogyny.
— severian (@SeveriansSun) October 3, 2021
Nothing wrong with white women writing books, why don’t you stop bitching and create something. Narcissist cows.

Oh please.
White women have also been oppressed.
Or do you want to get into the oppression competition? Who has been hurt the most?(You gotta put Jewish women way up on that list… Which I’m sure will make you upset.)
— David Sucher (@CityComforts) October 3, 2021
Dividing women by race serves male interests. Who is funding you? I cannot imagine why any feminist would engage in this level of racism. White women are harassed, raped and killed. Colour doesn’t protect them. All women are at risk. Every single one of us.
What liars you are.— nobo witch (@NoboWitch) October 3, 2021
The tweet posted by the Women’s March was part of a longer thread. The other tweets warned the women not to bring coat hangers or weapons. Conversely, they enthusiastically urged women to bring their masks, of course.
Look:
If you’re rallying with us for abortion justice, don’t forget to bring:
👟 Comfy shoes
💧 Water and a snack
⚡️ Portable Charger
😷 Mask
🧴 Hand Sanitizer
👜 Fanny Pack + ID— Women’s March (@womensmarch) October 2, 2021
Please don’t bring:
❌ Coat hanger imagery
❌ “Handmaid’s Tale” outfits
❌ WeaponsWhy the first two? Head to our next tweets ⬇️
— Women’s March (@womensmarch) October 2, 2021
We don’t use coat hangers or coat hanger imagery because we don’t want to accidentally reenforce right-wing talking points that self-managed abortions are dangerous, scary and harmful.
