Some members of the increasingly radical far-left believe that a parent’s right to choose what their children are allowed to learn at school is “anathema to a democracy.”
One such member, Jennifer C. Berkshire, a contributor to The Nation who also hosts her own education-themed podcast, expressed this notion in a tweet Friday.
“This kind of thinking – that kids should only be taught what their parents want them to learn – is absolutely anathema to a democracy. And that’s exactly the point,” she wrote.

Her tweet was posted in response to another left-wing Twitter user who’d had a conniption over something said last week by Wisconsin State Rep. Donna Rozar.
In a statement to the Wisconsin State Journal, Rozar had defended a recently advanced bill to ban the teaching of racial essentialism in the state’s schools.
“I don’t want school professionals to make decisions about teaching and learning. I want parents to be in charge of teaching and learning that their children and students go to,” she’d said.
This notion that parents’ opposition to the teaching of racial essentialism matters upset some random Twitter leftist named Nick Fleisher, who wrote that her words were “grounds for resignation in a sane political world.”
Berkshire responded to his tweet by posting her screed about democracy and also linking her readers to a recent piece she’d published to The Nation about how “*parents’ rights* is a centerpiece of a GOP that is increasingly hostile to public education AND democracy.”

It’s not clear why parents complaining about their children being taught racialism essentialism is a threat to democracy …
In fact, according to critics, that Berkshire and her cohorts believe something so radical make THEM the real threat to democracy.
Look at some of the backlash below:
The idea that kids should only be taught what their parents want them to learn is absolutely anathema to totalitarianism.
Fixed it for you.

State sanctioned indoctrination. Where have I seen that? *cracks open history book* – Ah yes. CCCP.
At least you’re honest. 🤷🏻♀️

Democracy, incorrectly: your children belong to Ushttps://t.co/w6uhQMuyAu

Unfortunately, Berkshire’s belief fits with a growing perspective among the far-left — — first articulated publicly in 2013 by then-MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry — that children are the responsibility of communities and the state, not individual parents.
It’s this belief that’s inspired some left-wing courts to eliminate the custody rights of parents of so-called “transgender” and “non-confirming” children if said parents refuse to allow their children to “transition.”
“Last year in Ohio, a judge removed a biological girl from her parents’ custody after they declined to help her ‘transition’ to male with testosterone supplements,” The Heritage Foundation reported in 2019.
“When her parents wanted to treat her with counseling instead, the county prosecutor charged them with abuse and neglect, while transgender activists and pro-trans doctors compared their decision to denying treatment for asthma or even cancer patients.”
At the time, the foundation warned that Democrats were seeking to enshrine this elimination of custody rights in federal law via the so-called Equality Act.
Two years later, the threat of the Equality Act being signed into law looms even larger because a Democrat now controls the White House.
The “Equality Act” (HR5) will allow the government to remove custody rights from any parents who refuse to allow their own children to “transition” through surgery & hormones.

Yet to far-left activists like Berkshire — as well as every congressional Democrat who supports the Equality Act — this is apparently “what democracy looks like.”
And the reason they believe this, according to critics, is because they define “democracy” by whether or not their ideology is being enacted.
If their ideology is being enacted, then they’re living in a “democracy.” If not, then they’re not living in a democracy. This attitude effectively makes them activists.
And as also noted by critics, this is the core reason why parental rights do matter, because so many contemporary teachers aren’t educators — they’re activists using the job title of “teacher” to indoctrinate students in left-wing ideology instead of teaching them math, science, etc.
Each teacher has my kids for one year.
They’ll be my kids forever.
If failed ideology continues to contribute their confusion and misery, who will help them deal with all that comes with that?
Not any of the educators who thought creating an army of activists was their job.— Nick (@nickyforthcause) September 25, 2021
It’s not for you to decide if children should be brainwashed by an activist oriented education system.

What is taught should not fulfill the agenda of social activists or religious zealots. Parents have every right to have high expectations of public ed. It is a partnership requiring participation and input from all stakeholders. Best managed locally
— Sarcastic Monk (@sarc_monk) September 25, 2021
The flip side is what’s happening and that’s that you are teaching them what YOU want. We stopped teaching kids what they needed when the schools decided the revolution needed activist. Parents just want their kids educated, you want them indoctrinated.

The USA ranks 30th in the world for math and 11th for science. As a parent I would like my kids to learn more in those areas. Maybe throw some reading and critical thinking in there too. I don’t think that’s unreasonable.
