Afghan refugee attacks female landscaper with knife because she was working

An Afghan refugee reportedly attacked a female landscaper with a knife near Berlin because he reportedly did not like the fact that a woman was working.

ABC News reported that the 29-year-old man allegedly attacked and severely injured the 58-year-old female gardener who was toiling away in a city park, “allegedly because he didn’t like the fact that as a woman she was working, police said Sunday.”

The Saturday afternoon assault took place in Berlin’s Wilmersdorf district, the report said. The network also noted that a 66-year-old who was passing by was also badly injured when he attempted to help the woman fend off the attack.

The identity of the assailant was not released by police in accordance with Germany’s privacy laws, ABC News added.

Police said that, initially, the man approached the woman and began to speak with her before suddenly pulling out a knife and stabbing her a number of times in the neck. When the older man passing by attempted to intervene, the assailant attacked him as well. Both victims’ identities also were not released by police, the report noted.

On Sunday, the general state prosecutor’s office in Berlin said that the attacker has been arrested and is being charged with attempted murder and counts of aggravated assault. In a statement, police said that the suspect could be suffering from a mental condition, but police and prosecutors are nevertheless investigating from the aspect that the attack could have been caused by his Islamist faith and ideology.

In 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel opened up the country to a wave of refugees from the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, which then fueled a wave of violent attacks that many in the country blamed on her open border policies.

Reuters reported in 2016, however, that popular support for Merkel plunged after taking in at least 1 million refugees amid escalating crime.

“In a poll of 1,003 people conducted Aug. 1-2, just 34 percent of people said they were satisfied or very satisfied with Merkel’s refugee policy. This was the lowest level since the question was first asked last October,” the newswire service reported in August of that year, adding: “Some 65 percent were dissatisfied with the policy.”

Roughly two years later, the BBC reported that government-commissioned research found a rise in crime and violence in the country was very likely linked to the mass importation of refugees.

Researchers used data from Lower Saxony, considered to be an average German state; young migrant males there were to blame for a 90-percent rise in crime, according to data, and many of those attacks are against women.

But crimes — mostly sex crimes — committed against European women by Afghan males are the most prevalent, according to reports.

“What they do here is unacceptable. The moment they see a young woman wearing a skirt or any type of loose clothing, they believe they have a free pass. It is about time migrants are made to understand: things in Germany function differently than in their home countries,” a restaurant owner told a local media outlet in Germany in 2016 after two Afghan men led a group of others in assaulting young German girls for hours at a mall.

In 2017 in a piece for the National Interest, author and researcher Cheryl Benard noted that after working with refugees “for decades,” she found “Europe’s Afghan crime wave…mind-boggling.”

“Europeans were predisposed to be positive towards Afghan refugees,” the Austrian researcher wrote. “But it quickly became obvious that something was wrong, very wrong, with these young Afghan men: they were committing sex crimes to a much greater extent than other refugees, even those from countries that were equally or more backward, just as Islamic and conservative, and arguably just as misogynist.”
