Reuters reports on Biden trip home ‘after long day in the saddle’; GOP slams him for Delaware retreat

President Joe Biden was given a pass by a Reuters reporter for retiring early to his home in Delaware for a long Labor Day weekend on Friday despite the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan, where hundreds of Americans are stuck, a weak domestic jobs report, and despite an already light schedule.

Which is not to say that Friday wasn’t a busy day for the president.

“President Biden, after a long day in the saddle, has arrived in Wilmington, Delaware, for the Labor Day weekend,” White House correspondent Steve Holland tweeted late Friday evening.

Social media users immediately pounced on Holland’s tweet, which appeared to provide cover for the president.

“Did you really just say, ‘long day in the saddle?'” said one user in response.

“Steve’s working hard to get old Joe’s poll numbers up. Worthless hack,” wrote another user.

Here’s a sampling of other responses from Twitter:

Meanwhile, Republicans railed at Biden for taking off early as the situation in Afghanistan becomes more disordered and turbulent following the chaotic, deadly U.S. withdrawal from the country last week.

GOP lawmakers are increasingly demanding answers from Biden and his administration about how they plan to extract Americans and Afghan allies still trapped in the country.

Biden flew to his home in Wilmington, Del., after surveying the damage done to New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana from Hurricane Ida. The president is planning to visit New Jersey and New York as well to assess damage there, but not until Tuesday, according to his current schedule.

“American citizens are still stranded behind enemy lines in Afghanistan, and meanwhile Joe Biden is vacationing in Delaware,” tweeted former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Saturday.

“Joe Biden left Americans hostage in Afghanistan. No speech, press release, or Biden family vacation in Delaware can change that,” Meadows tweeted Sept. 1.

“Sorry, still not quite over Joe Biden getting 13 of our warriors killed, bugging out with American civilians still in country, and now preparing to give economic aid to the people we just spent 20 years fighting,” added The First TV’s Jesse Kelly, a Marine combat veteran.

“Roughly 100 Americans will be spending their weekend abandoned in Afghanistan” as Biden relaxes in Delaware, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), who is running for the U.S. Senate next year, added.

Other Republicans and conservatives also hit back at Biden for his Delaware retreat.
