‘Shoo-in’ NYC council candidate wants ‘restorative justice circles’ where victims and attackers meet

A Queens City Council candidate with socialist tendencies who is considered a lock for her race is pushing a plan that would ensure New Yorkers are victimized twice for crimes committed against them.

“The radical ‘public safety’ plan put forward by socialist candidate Tiffany Cabán, who’s a shoo-in for a Queens City Council seat in November’s election, would essentially re-victimize the victims of violent crimes in the name of ‘restorative justice,'” the New York Post reported Wednesday.

Her “woke, 48-page manifesto,” as The Post describes it, would remove from police officers and courts vital, fundamental law-enforcement functions including putting violent offenders behind bars — a plan that comes amid a historic spike in violent criminal actions and shootings in the Big Apple.

“Communities will be empowered to develop individualized strategies to help heal wounds of violence rather than being forced to rely on policing and prisons as the only recourse,” says the policy from Cabán, who is supported by the Democratic Socialists of America in a race that is not competitive.

Titled, “A New Vision of Public Safety for New York City,” her plan lays out a plan in which victims of violent crimes would be mostly responsible for deciding what happens to their perpetrator.

However, as The Post says, the “‘Kumbaya’-style” plan does not include a means of taking the violent criminal off city streets so they don’t hurt anyone else.

“Example of Use: A person is beat up, suffers a broken rib, and is robbed of his wallet. First, his needs are heard and affirmed, and he works with trained staff to develop a services and healing plan,” the proposal says, as quoted by the paper.

“Then, when he is ready, he participates in restorative justice circles with the person who harmed him and their respective support systems. He asks questions and gets answers, and they develop an accountability and consequences plan,” it continues.

Other city agencies to include the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice and Human Resources Administration also have roles in the process, the proposal lays out.

A former lower Manhattan City Council candidate, Maud Maron, blasted the socialist Cabán’s proposal.

It’s a “bad plan that would drastically increase violent crime and make the most vulnerable [New Yorkers] less safe,” Maron said Tuesday, according to The Post.

“Robberies will increase if our only response is to ‘hear & affirm’ victims before the ‘restorative Justice circle,'” she noted in a tweet.

Cabán won her Democratic primary in June, and now she faces a general election in November for District 22, which is heavily Democratic. If she wins, as expected, she will take her seat on the Queens council in January.

The DSA-backed candidate, who almost won the Queens District Attorney race in 2019, has vowed to work alongside leading Democratic NYC mayoral candidate Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain who supports tougher law enforcement and has come out in opposition to defunding his former department. He has also come out in opposition of leftist political affiliations to which she belongs, The Post said.

“Nobody’s going to be surprised that we have very different views on how we achieve public safety, and there’s going to be a lot of tension and push-back there,” Cabán, 34, told The Post during a previous interview. “At the same time, there are going to be areas where I will be eager to find common ground and I think one of the easiest places to point to is the crisis-management system.”

“Eric has been somebody who has supported the expansion of CMS,” she said of Adams, who is currently the Brooklyn borough president. “He is someone who buys into cure-violence models.”
