Marjorie Taylor Greene warns Telecoms they will be shut down if they go along with Dems’ Jan 6 request

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) fully agrees with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s warning to the big wireless companies and then some.

Provided the GOP wins control of Congress in the 2022 midterm elections, Greene is promising to shut down the telecoms entirely if they “play with the Democrats” and hand over private communications data.

“It’s no longer Republicans versus Democrats. It is more like Americans versus communists,” Greene told Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday about the authoritarian, anti-free speech bent of the political organization of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, et al., that is no longer what “maybe your mommy and daddy voted for.”

The first-term congresswoman was reacting to the Democrat-controlled January 6 investigatory committee’s attempt to strong-arm the big carriers into turning over personal phone records and text messages of some GOP lawmakers, including Greene, and certain members of the Trump family, and the pushback by McCarthy.

The Democrats are moving ahead with their probe even though the FBI has reportedly concluded that minimal evidence exists to suggest that the riot at the U.S. Capitol was part of any organized plot to overturn the results of the November election.

In the discussion on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Rep. Greene described the current investigation as just another witch hunt along the lines of the politicized Russia-collusion hoax that sought to undermine the Trump administration.

The latest ploy by the Democrats, however, “is leading us into waters we’ve never been in an America. You see, America was never meant to be a communist country, but these are the tactics that Democrats are wanting to use…,” she said.

“If members of Congress can have our personal cell phone data exposed, and so that our Democrat colleagues and, unfortunately some of our so-called Republican colleagues, can rifle through, just to hurt as politically in the next election, that we are going into a dangerous place in this country.”

Describing the situation as “outrageous,” Greene made the larger point that the Democrats’ fishing expedition sets a dangerous precedent for everyone from all walks of life.

“It’s not just us that will be in extreme danger. It’s the American people, because we never want to have a federal government where they are willing to break federal law, violate our privacy, search and seizure, and demand from private companies to hand over this data…because Republicans are coming back into the majority in 2022, and we will take this very serious,” she vowed.

Democrats “do not care about your privacy. They will do anything to achieve their political means, and that means violating federal law…These telecommunications companies, if they go along with this, they will be shut down. And that’s a promise,” Greene concluded.

In his statement, McCarthy metaphorically drew a line in the sand and warned of potential consequences for corporate America.

“Adam Schiff, Bennie Thompson, and Nancy Pelosi’s attempts to strong-arm private companies to turn over individuals’ private data would put every American with a phone or computer in the crosshairs of a surveillance state run by Democrat politicians. If these companies comply with the Democrat order to turn over private information, they are in violation of federal law and subject to losing their ability to operate in the United States.

“If companies still choose to violate federal law, a Republican majority will not forget and will stand with Americans to hold them fully accountable under the law,”  he added.

“That sounds like a threat,” Carlson said about the GOP leader’s announcement, “and we fervently hope it is,” while acknowledging that he has criticized McCarthy in the past for his lackluster leadership. “That statement is not weak,” he acknowledged.

The left is criticizing McCarthy for so-called thuggery for issuing this warning, but he seems to be playing hardball in the same way Democrats would if the positions were reversed.

The power-thirsty Democrats traditionally positioned themselves as the party of civil liberties, but that was then, and this is now.

Complicating matters perhaps for the GOP’s attempt to keep phone records private, as evidenced by recent history in various other matters, is that corporate America has increasingly become liberal and woke.

This dispute could wind up at the U.S. Supreme Court, particularly given the potential Fourth Amendment implications. The outcome there — if it gets there — could be very uncertain, given some of the court’s recent rulings that are all over the map, even with a purported 6-3 conservative majority. Last year, the high court ruled, for example, that President Trump had to turn over his tax records to a New York prosecutor.

“When you disobey Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Democratic leadership, they seize your text messages. Does that sound like a free country to you? No. And we can’t allow it to happen if we want to live in a free country,” Carlson declared at the beginning of the segment.
