CBS News correspondent Bo Erickson is calling on White House staffers to tell President Joe Biden about his declining job approval rating in the face of a disastrous pullout from Afghanistan following a 20-year occupation.
The call comes after Biden gave the press updates on Sunday regarding his administration’s actions ahead of encroaching Hurricane Henri, which made landfall along Rhode Island’s coastline earlier in the day. Biden also briefed reporters on the latest developments in Afghanistan then took questions.
At one point, CBS News reporter Ed O’Keefe asked Biden to comment on the most recent polling data from his network showing that most Americans definitely approve of withdrawing from Afghanistan, but a majority do not approve of the way the deadly, chaotic withdrawal has been handled.
“A new poll out today shows Americans wanted to withdraw from Afghanistan, but they disapprove of the way you’ve handled it,” O’Keefe began. “The majority of Americans – forgive me, I’m just the messenger – no longer consider you to be competent, focused, or effective at the job. What would you say to those Americans?”
Initially, the president said that pulling U.S. troops out of the war-torn country was “going to be hard and painful no matter when it started.” But after O’Keefe pressed further, Biden said that he “didn’t see” the poll the reporter was referencing.
Not long afterward, Erickson posted the poll on Twitter and directed it to the White House while tagging the president.

“Most Americans have wanted to withdraw from Afghanistan for a while, and most still do. But not like this,” CBS News began its polling report.
The network went on to report its polling indicates that the public’s perception of what took place beginning last week as the U.S. military began evacuating American diplomatic personnel and others ahead of a Taliban takeover of Kabul is “decidedly negative,” adding that there is also fear of “wider repercussions from a heightened threat of terrorism.”
The survey also found a public conveying “rough judgments on” Biden for “his handling of” the withdrawal as well as “his overall presidential approval rating,” which has been “dropping substantially.”
In addition, “broader views” of other presidential “qualities like effectiveness and competence” are suffering as well, the network reported.
The survey found that while 63 percent of Americans approved of withdrawing American forces from Afghanistan, only 47 percent approve of the way it’s been done thus far.
Regarding the withdrawal, 44 percent of those surveyed think that so far it has gone “very badly” with 74 percent overall saying it’s gone very or somewhat badly.
In July, 60 percent of respondents told CBS News they approved of the way Biden was handling the withdrawal.
Biden’s overall job approval rating has tumbled as well, following a trend. In March, it was 62 percent, according to CBS News, but it fell to 58 percent in July to 50 percent now.
“He takes a big hit among independents. They’d given him positive marks in July, but now, more than half disapprove of how he’s handling both withdrawing from Afghanistan and his job overall,” CBS News continued, adding that his approval is also falling among Democratic voters.
Finally, more Americans blame him for the Taliban takeover (36 percent) than former President Donald Trump (25 percent).
