President Joe Biden isn’t the only political figure in denial over the catastrophe in Afghanistan. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, his biggest cheerleader, also appears to be in complete denial over the stark realities playing out in the Middle Eastern nation.
When she first praised the president’s “wisdom” in a statement last Saturday, the situation on the ground was already bad but not that bad, relatively speaking.
But by the time she praised him again in an interview with San Francisco station KPIX on Tuesday, the situation in Afghanistan had already devolved into total hell, with the Taliban having reconquered the entire country, and both U.S. citizens and Afghans themselves desperately trying to flee the nation to avoid execution.
These facts didn’t stop the smiling speaker from joyfully lavishing the president with praise during Tuesday’s interview.

The clip above began with one of the anchors asking whether the administration should “have had a stronger U.S. military presence for the transition?”
The answer to that question, according to numerous experts, is a resounding YES. But “yes” was not among the words Pelosi then uttered.
“Well, first, may I just say that I commend the president for the action that he took. It was strong, it was decisive and it was the right thing to do. We should have been out of Afghanistan a while back,” she said.
She appeared to be praising the president for moving forward with the withdrawal. But that didn’t answer the question. There are plenty of critics who support the withdrawal but vehemently oppose how the president executed it.
Please stop conflating two issues
1. The decision by Trump and Biden to withdraw from Afghanistan
2. How we conducted the withdrawal and left people behind
I support 1 but not 2
There was better way to do this

I support ending the war in Afghanistan, but Biden’s withdrawal & lack of a plan to get people out of the country is a colossal failure. He’s pointed the finger at everyone & taken no responsibility. There are Americans stranded w/out support from @StateDept as to how to get out.

Again: You can support the withdrawal, as I do, and lament the incredibly amateurish execution.

Continuing her remarks, Pelosi at least admitted that the current situation isn’t ideal.
“Now we’re — unfortunately, one of the possibilities was that it would be in disarray, as it is, but that has to be corrected,” she said.
“And it is my understanding, from the assurances we have received, that the military will be there negotiating with the Taliban for the safe exit of American citizens and friends, people who have helped us, our allies there, and people working in the nonprofit sector, but also not just U.S. NGOs, but those who have worked in Afghan NGOs as well, who would be targets,” she added.
But the administration has been unwilling to “ensure safe passage” for stranded Americans trying to travel to the airport in Kabul.
In addition, the president himself refused during an ABC News interview on Wednesday to promise that he’ll keep Americans troops stationed in Afghanistan past Aug. 31st if Americans remained trapped in the nation at the time.

One of the anchors then asked Pelosi about all the U.S. manufactured military arsenal that was left behind in Afghanistan and has since been commandeered by the Taliban.
“How much does that raise the threat of future terrorist attacks, this well-armed Taliban?” the anchor said.
In another show of defiance of reality, the speaker suggested that the withdrawal has “reduced the prospect of any attack” and that the president’s stern words alone will be enough to hold the Taliban at bay.
“Well, I do believe that the president’s decision was based on one that reduced the prospect of any attack on our homeland. And the president has made it very clear to the Taliban, any assault on any American entity or person would be met forcefully,” she said.

Pelosi also made excuses for all the left-behind military arsenal.
“This is what happens when you withdraw. Some stuff, some equipment is left there. It was thought that that would be used, it was hoped that that would be used by the Afghan military to defend its own country,” she said.
She neglected to mention that the Afghan military failed to defend its own country because it was left without any logistical support thanks to the president’s decision-making.
Depressing the #USG officials, incl. #POTUS are blaming #ANSAF for #Taliban takeover when US withdrew air + logistical support with no backup, and completely misread the situation. #ownup https://t.co/uTLanrTSjW

Pelosi’s sycophantic remarks about the president drew criticism on Twitter.
Look:
