Jason Chaffetz, a Fox News contributor and former chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee when he represented Utah’s 3rd congressional district, penned an op-ed that asked Trump haters on the right a poignant question:
“What did you get for your trade?”
The question coming as the U.S. faces a humiliating scenario in Afghanistan, where the Taliban have retaken control of the country while thousands of Americans remain in the capital city of Kabul, our southern border with Mexico is wide open and a major point of import of COVID-19, gas prices keep creeping up and the shadow of inflation looms over our economy.
“A little less than a year ago, a significant number of independent and Republican voters decided to trade bad tweets for bad policy. Today, your Twitter feed is void of President Trump’s tweets. But the price was high,” Chaffetz began.
“You traded energy efficiency for dependency on the Middle East. Whereas a year ago you enjoyed inexpensive gas, high paying energy jobs, and fewer incentives to entangle ourselves in Middle Eastern politics, today President Biden is begging OPEC to produce more oil,” he continued. “Apparently, his climate agenda can handle more oil production as long as Americans aren’t the ones profiting from it.”
Chaffetz added that Trump haters “traded an energy pipeline out of Canada for a crime pipeline out of Mexico.”
“Instead of creating jobs for skilled American workers, Biden is creating opportunities for cartels, traffickers and COVID-positive migrants,” he wrote.
Border Patrol has already encountered more than a million migrants who have crossed illegally into the U.S. this year and the number grows monthly, exceeding 200,000 in July as the media conveniently looks the other way. That figure may reach 2 million before the year’s out, the former lawmaker noted.
“You traded rising wages for rising prices. Inflation is up sharply – 5.4% from a year ago, swallowing any wage gains produced by a tight labor market,” he said. “In just the first eight months of the new administration, we are all paying more for food, gas, housing and vehicles.”
Acknowledging that Trump was “no fan of austerity,” Chaffetz highlighted the national debt, saying “in just seven months, Democrats have spent $6.5 trillion of the estimated $3.8 trillion expected in federal revenues this year.”
He stressed that with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in control of the House purse strings, COVID relief and infrastructure bills “are generally filled with bailouts and slush funds.”
“You traded safety and security for less safety and security,” he observed. “The one and only spending priority Democrats have shown a willingness to cut is security. Their spending legislation cuts military spending by nearly $400 billion over the next 10 years.”
Then there’s the turmoil in many American cities, where crime is on the rise amid cries to defund the police and liberal prosecutors are releasing criminals without bail, often reducing felonies to misdemeanors or refusing to press charges at all.
“You traded fairness for a George Orwell version of equality,” Chaffetz said. “Under the new administration, there are two systems of justice. Protesters on the left can set buildings ablaze, vandalize them and shoplift with impunity. Protesters on the right will be branded, surveilled and prosecuted as domestic terrorists.”
In conclusion, the ex-politician said Americans “are not better off than we were eight months ago,” except for one notable exception. That being the COVID-19 vaccine that Trump fast-tracked.
“For that success, Joe Biden is happy to take credit,” he said.
“But the grim reality for Trump haters is this: the tradeoff has been costly,” Chaffetz closed out. “The cost could become even more dear if Democrats are successful in leveraging their slim majority to commandeer control of local elections. Their ability to tilt the playing field dramatically in their favor could prevent voters from ever restoring the freedom and prosperity we took for granted just eight months ago.”
This being a reference to the “We the People” Act, a Democrat power-grab that would effectively cede control of elections to the federal government and largely ensure one-party rule for decades to come.
