Ashli Babbit’s mother has been forced to grieve the loss of her daughter, a U.S. Air Force veteran fatally shot in the Capitol riot on January 6th, in silence as her pleas for answers from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) have returned radio silence despite her claim that she has reached out dozens of times to both offices.
Micki Witthoeft, Babbitt’s mother, sat down with conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza for a podcast to discuss Babbitt’s death and the aftermath.
The Air Force veteran’s mother maintains that in addition to the silence from Pelosi and Feinstein, neither the Biden administration nor the Justice Department have answered her questions about the fateful day. They have ignored her requests to identity the law enforcement officer who was recorded on video firing the shot that killed Babbitt.
“I knew that my daughter had been shot but there had been no official contact with our family as to who [shot her] — and my son-in-law actually learned of Ashli’s death by seeing it on TV, but it was still hard to get confirmation from anybody. We called hospitals, it was just hard to get confirmation at that time. So his confirmation of his wife’s death came through the television,” Witthoeft detailed the devastating day.
Babbitt’s mother said that three weeks after her daughter’s death, she began phoning at least one elected official per day in Washington and California in the hopes of obtaining answers, or at the very least, more details on the death of her daughter.
“I started with Nancy Pelosi. And I called Nancy Pelosi and I called Dianne Feinstein … from three weeks after Ashli’s death to currently. … Nancy Pelosi I have called no less than a dozen times. I have never received any kind of correspondence from her. She will not call me back. I’ve emailed her, she doesn’t email me back. .. I’ve had absolutely no response,” the grieving mother told D’Souza.
She alleged that Dianne Feinstein’s staff was “just awful”. When she first began calling, one aide did not recognize Babbitt’s name, but that would be the least cruel offense.
“Although it’s unfortunate, your daughter should not have stormed the Capitol. Dianne Feinstein will never have two minutes for you,” another aide berated her in a later call, Witthoeft recounted.
Even Republican lawmakers have left her answerless. Witthoeft reported trying to contact Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), U.S. Rep. Scott Peters, San Diego councilman Carl DeMaio and San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob to no avail.
Witthoeft reported that the only person she has heard from “in an official capacity” is former President Donald Trump on July 1 of this year.
Issa’s office did call Babbitt’s husband, considered her next of kin, to inform him of the her death that day.
The mother told D’Souza that despite Babbit’s military service, she was denied a ceremonious military burial for her death because of her connection to the January 6th riot. That did not deter Witthoeft from giving her daughter the beautiful funeral she deserved.
“When we scattered her ashes, I had them dedicated to patriotic people. They did a flag ceremony for her and taps was played for her and we honored her with respect,” Witthoeft said.
Left with no answers, let alone a returned phone call out of decency for a grieving mother, the attorney for Babbitt’s family announced plans for a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Capitol Police and the unidentified officer. It claims Babbitt’s death was the result of an “ambush” attack against her.
Witthoeft is rightfully fed up.
“When people say that our government is for the people, by the people – unless you’re trying to get in, and then nobody’s opening these doors, and that’s gotta change because that’s such an un-American way to do things.” she told D’Souza.
