CNN’s regular medical analyst and veritable coronavirus czar, Dr. Leana Wen, has called for schoolchildren to be forced to wear industrial-grade masks and undergo coronavirus testing at least once a week.
Speaking Tuesday on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” she falsely argued that such draconian measures are necessary because it’s a “dangerous” time for children.
“This is now one of the most dangerous times in the pandemic when it comes to children because we have the more contagious Delta variant, we have surges and we have so many adults letting down their guard, not wearing mask, not getting vaccinated. That’s contributing to this really dangerous environment for children,” she said.
That’s not true. The “overall risk of children becoming severely ill or dying from Covid is extremely low,” as reported by the BBC last month following an analysis conducted by scientists from University College London, and the Universities of York, Bristol, and Liverpool.
“[T]he numbers appear to show that severe illness, hospitalization and death are rare in children infected with the coronavirus,” NPR added in a report published Tuesday, citing data from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.
Continuing her screed, Wen then used her false argument to justify treating children like lepers.
Listen:
“We do know what it takes to get our children back in school safely. We also know that it requires layers. And so when we remove a layer — for example, we remove the layer of distancing because we can’t get kids back in school in person, full time if we still keep six feet distancing — then indoor masking becomes even more important,” she said.
“Type of mask also matters. Ideally KN95 or N95 if the toddler is able to tolerate that, if not at least a three-ply surgical mask. Cloth masks are not enough,” she added.
KN95 and N95 are industrial-grade masks.
“We should at least be having weekly testing for all the unvaccinated children and staff. Putting all that together is how we can get kids back in school safely,” Wen continued.
Her remarks provoked some criticism on social media:
If you want to put children in fitted N95’s for an entire school day you are either incredibly stupid or a psychopath.

Imagine wanting kindergartners to wear an N95 all day.

Why don’t they just make kids wear f***ing space suits?

They keep treating this like the Spanish Flu when we know it’s nothing like that. We know why they keep doing that, too.

Its time to realize the just b/c someone is an MD doesn’t mean they follow facts or science. Their subjectivity and own ideologies drive their wanted outcomes….

Of course, if it were up to Dr. Leana Wen, most of these children would not have been born in the first place.

Her draconian recommendations came days after a prominent conservative commentator visually showed the world the consequences of making children wear just the regular disposable masks found at grocery stores (versus the even tighter-fitting KN95 and N95 masks).
Last Thursday, writer Bethany S. Mandel posted a tweet of what her 6-year-old’s mask looked like after a full day of daycare.
“Related: How strange it is that progressives see scaring their children into wearing dirty, bacteria-filled cloth on their faces for 8-9 hours a day without complaint as evidence of their amazing parenting,” she wrote as the caption.

Wen’s remarks also came on the same day that classically liberal writer and commentator Andrew Sullivan urged network host Anderson Cooper and his viewers to “stop worrying” about the coronavirus and learn to live it with the way he’s learned to live with HIV.
“The trouble with the viruses is that you can get fixated on them rather than the goal. The goal is living, and I’ve lived for 28 years with HIV, and it’s in my bone marrow. And I’ve learned [I can’t] defeat it, I can’t declare victory. But I can get on with my life and make sure I don’t die from it or get sick from it,” he said.
Similarly, he argued, Americans should seek vaccination from the coronavirus and then move on with their lives.
His point was that Americans must not lose sight of the end goal, which was supposed to have been to slow the spread for 15 days, just enough for hospitals to equip themselves with the resources needed to handle a surge in the virus.
Well, it’s been over 15 months, and yet many on the left still seek to “slow the spread” by methods as stunningly draconian as forcing tiny children to wear industrial grade masks and undergo weekly testing …
