The twenty two Texas Democrats who “fled” to Washington, DC on a private jet last month as an part of an effort to block “restrictive” voting reform bills are now suing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for “causing them anxiety and distress”.
The complaint, filed on Friday by the nearly two dozen Democrats, claims that Abbott and Republicans are infringing on their rights in attempts to bring them back to Texas for special voting sessions. It also follows a pledge by Abbott to have the Democrats arrested immediately upon their return to Texas.
The Democrats claim that they “have been deprived of liberty for substantial periods of time, [and] suffered much anxiety and distress over the separation from their families”. suffered from “much discomfort and embarrassment” because their reputations have been “impaired” and they “have lost much time from their homes and the companionship and care of their families and have been required to spend substantial sums of money,” according to the Daily Mail.
Unfortunately for Texas Democrats, a bruised ego and separation from their families brought on by their own actions, does not exactly qualify as a slam dunk suit.
Republican House Speaker Dade Phelan and State Rep. James White are also listed as defendants on the docket.
On Thursday, Governor Abbott declared a second special session that requires the Democrats’ presence.
“The Texas Legislature achieved a great deal during the 87th Legislative Session, and they have a responsibility to finish the work that was started. I will continue to call special session after special session to reform our broken bail system, uphold election integrity, and pass other important items that Texans demand and deserve. Passing these Special Session agenda items will chart a course towards a stronger and brighter future for the Lone Star State,” Abbott declared in a statement.
The Texas Democrats seem to enjoy jetting away from their responsibilities and are still camped out a hotel that charges nearly $200 per night near D.C.’s center according to the Daily Mail. A few have even reportedly ditched the nation’s capital for vacations abroad.
While Americans are being told to hunker down and embrace federal coronavirus mandates again, some of the Democrats who ignited a super spreader event by infecting six people with coronavirus in D.C. last month are now going on vacation.
A “Texas Monthly” reporter confirmed that Representatives Julie Johnson and Jessica González voyaged to Portugal with their significant others. The lawmakers defended their actions to the reporter because, “they had been planning [the vacation], with non-refundable tickets, for a year-and-a-half.”
Hi. Covering the TXDEMS in DC for @TexasMonthly. Can confirm @juliejohnsonTX and her wife & @jessicafortexas and her fiancé are in Portugal for a vacation they had been planning, with non-refundable tickets, for a year-and-a-half. Still participating in caucus meetings via ZOOM.

Not to fret taxpayers, these world travelers told the reporter that they are still participating in meetings–via Zoom.
Other state legislators, like Rep. Tom Oliverson called out the Democrats for their refusal to do their jobs, noting all lawmakers have had to make sacrifices in their roles:
Wow, just wow. 🤯 Had to cancel my family’s vacation last week to Grand Teton because of a special session they helped create back in May. Texas deserves better than this. #txlege https://t.co/guEWC9m2Fc

If this was not enough to convince Americans just how out of touch these Democrats are, last month The Dallas Democrats had the audacity to request care package donations of “Dr. Pepper, salsa, hard candy, hairspray, travel toiletries, hand sanitizers, sewing kits, first aid, and/ or $ to pay shipping,” on Twitter.
The Texas Democrats predicted that they would spend $1.5 million all told for their D.C. escapade from July to August 7. The two private jets they chartered came to a grand sum of $100,000.
Surprisingly, White House Press Secretary, Jen Pskai admitted on Friday that if the special session required Texas Democrats’ attendance, that they need to get back to the Lonestar state to represent their constituents.
Let’s be very clear. This is the spokesperson for the POTUS, who is the leader of their party. Even she admits the #MillerDs are constitutionally required to be in Austin and not in Washington DC to represent their constituents. #getbacktowork #txlege https://t.co/NiT3FioE1I

The lawsuit filed also alleges that some of the Democrats were targeted because of their race, but failed to provide evidence according to the Texas Tribune, which also noted that the lawyer representing Democrats, Craig Anthony Washington, is practicing under a suspended license.
Governor Abbott has yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
