New York’s “Luv Guv” Andrew Cuomo is facing potential impeachment proceedings supported by a majority of Democrats in the state’s Assembly if he refuses to resign after the state attorney general’s probe found he had sexually harassed 11 women.
At least 86 state Assembly members to date support giving the governor the boot and they have either released public statements saying so or have spoken to the Associated Press. Cuomo is currently facing criminal probes in at least four counties in the state.
One Assembly member declared “not a single voice of support” was heard in favor of Cuomo during an emergency State Assembly conference that took place on Tuesday. “I think all of us are reeling from the report as most of us did not expect this today,” the member told The New York Post. “Dozens spoke up.”
According to the New York Constitution, elected officials can be removed for “misconduct or malversation in office.” It only takes a simple majority in the state Assembly to impeach a government official. That means there are more than enough members ready to begin impeachment proceedings since it would only take 76 members out of the 150-member body.

“After our conference this afternoon to discuss the Attorney General’s report concerning sexual harassment allegations against Governor Cuomo, it is abundantly clear to me that the Governor has lost the confidence of the Assembly Democratic majority and that he can no longer remain in office,” Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie stated on Tuesday. “Once we receive all relevant documents and evidence from the Attorney General, we will move expeditiously and look to conclude our impeachment investigation as quickly as possible.”
Democratic governors from other states are also calling for Cuomo to resign or be impeached. President Biden has also said he should step down. He has lost almost every one of his allies. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and both of New York’s U.S. senators have also called for him to resign.

“The president believes Governor Cuomo should do the right thing, resign, and leave space for future leadership in New York,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.
One of Cuomo’s closest allies, New York Democratic Party chairperson Jay Jacobs, stated that Cuomo “has lost his ability to govern, both practically and morally.” Jacobs told Spectrum News he had attempted to persuade him to resign but “wasn’t making headway.”
Assembly Republicans want him gone as well. They “support the impeachment of the governor and supported the call for an immediate special session,” Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay’s spokesman Michael Fraser told the press on Wednesday.
Democratic State Assemblyman Ron Kim called on the Assembly to return to session “immediately” to initiate impeachment proceedings.
“There is no measure left to hide the truth. The governor broke the law so we must hold him accountable,” Kim asserted in a statement. “When institutions fail to believe victims, allow predators to act with impunity, or fail to put policies of protection in place, it sends a strong signal that condones this type of unacceptable behavior. We cannot afford to ignore his transgressions any longer: doing so will erode the integrity of our legislative body and demonstrate complicity in sheltering a sexual predator.”
Democratic State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins noted in a statement: “As I said when these disturbing allegations first came to light, the governor must resign for the good of the state. Now that the investigation is complete and the allegations have been substantiated, it should be clear to everyone that he can no longer serve as governor.”

Not only is Attorney General Letitia James’ report generating an extreme political firestorm that is engulfing Cuomo, he is also facing the wrath of prosecutors in New York City, Albany, Westchester, and Nassau County who publicly announced Tuesday and Wednesday that they have launched their own criminal investigations into sexual harassment allegations that have been filed against Cuomo.
“We are conducting our own separate investigation,” Albany County District Attorney David Soares affirmed on Tuesday.
“When our office learned yesterday that the Attorney General’s investigation of the Governor’s conduct was complete, our office contacted the Attorney General’s Office to begin requesting investigative materials in their possession pertaining to incidents that occurred in Manhattan,” a spokesman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance remarked.
According to The New York Post, Cuomo has even lost the support of unions in the state. “The unions cannot continue to support a workplace violator,” said Transportation Workers’ Union chief John Samuelsen. Heads of the AFL-CIO, DC27, New York State United Teachers, property-service-worker union 32BJ, and the Hotel Trades Council all denounced Cuomo. NYSUT boss Andy Pallotta called his conduct “repugnant and indefensible.”
Only one sitting New York State governor has ever been impeached, so Cuomo’s impending proceedings would be historic. William Sulzer was removed from office over a campaign finance scandal. He was elected in 1912.
It seems as if everyone is calling for Cuomo to resign, be impeached, and/or be thrown in jail:

Both houses of the NY state legislature are controlled by Democrats and have the power to impeach the Emmy-winning Gov. Cuomo.
And this is all completely independent of his multiple COVID scandals: hiding COVID deaths, nursing home recklessness, special favors for Chris, etc. https://t.co/KSwqwdY8s2
