Liberal Democrats across the country are embracing alarmism over the delta variant of the coronavirus as they re-up pandemic mandates that were previously eliminated because of the development of treatments and vaccines, which has led some like former congressman Trey Gowdy to believe that science will be the biggest pandemic casualty of all.
“Well, look, I’m vaccinated, and I’m happy to wear a mask. Here’s what I need. I need someone I trust to tell me why. Why now? What changed? When it changed?” Gowdy asked Monday on Fox News.
“I mean, science has — is a casualty of this pandemic. I mean, a year and a half ago, we believed doctors, but when doctors intentionally misrepresent facts, because they think they have a higher good, when they tell us science changes, but it’s not, it’s their understanding of science, and then when you have elected officials who say I’ve got a great set of rules for you, but I’m not going to follow them. I mean, that’s what I worry about, it’s the lack of confidence, and medicine and science,” Gowdy sounded off.
Mark Theissen, an AEI Fellow, also weighed in, pointing out the data that makes the reinstatement of mask mandates across the country seems more about Democrats retaining power than anything else.

“There are 93 million people who haven’t been vaccinated who are eligible. If you take about half of those having prior infection, that’s about 46 million people. We’re talking about a very small subset of the population that is at risk. For the rest of us the pandemic is over… we’ve turned this mortal threat into something that’s no more dangerous than common cold, and we’ve got to stop fear-mongering about it,” Theissen said.
Gowdy criticized politicians who are bringing back coronavirus restrictions, but not following them themselves. In the nation’s capital, Mayor Muriel Bowser reinstated mask mandates even for vaccinated individuals, but leading by example would prove to be too much to ask.
The mayor was photographed maskless just hours before her sweeping mandate went into effect, at her swanky birthday dinner with comedian Dave Chappelle who later had a show at the nearby Anthem theater.
Fox News correspondent and host Mike Emanuel asked Gowdy if there was any hypocrisy in the mayor going out and socializing all weekend and with former President Obama planning a massive birthday party on Martha’s Vineyard.
“I think the D.C. Mayor, yes. I’ve got a birthday coming up and I have five people coming to it. Actually, two said they couldn’t make it. So, now down to three. So, I don’t want to criticize President Obama. I got a big birthday coming up too,” Gowdy joked.
Earlier in the segment, Gowdy commented on the Democrat cover-up of the origins of the coronavirus in a lab in Wuhan– yet another move that has eroded Americans’ trust in leadership and the science.
“I just can’t get over how nonreceptive the mainstream media was when Tommy Cotton and Pompeo and John Ratcliffe, all mentioned this as a viable theory, they were laughed at,” Gowdy said, “Here is what I can promise you, our intelligence community already knows where that virus originated. Now, the Biden Administration may not want to share that. But after a year and a half, if a member of the minority party has access to information, then you know, our intelligence community has it, or else they should rename their community.”
The mistrust is evident and has been for some time. A 2019 Pew poll found that just 32 percent of Americans trust that medical research scientists give fair and accurate information all or most of the time. Interestingly enough, that same poll found that a 57 percent majority of Americans say they trust scientific research findings more when the data is openly available to the public.
The CDC initially delayed the release of the data they used to impose new recommendations and cautionary guidelines despite one’s vaccination status. However, it is now being reported that that data was from a single rejected study from India and a vaccine that hasn’t even gained approval for use in the U.S.
The decline in the trust of science couples hand-in-hand with a decline of trust in media and in government according to the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer.
The majority of Americans, 59 percent, agreed that “most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than with informing the public” while 61 percent of Americans think that “The media is not doing well at being objective and non-partisan.”
A notable 40 percent of respondents to the same survey said they deeply distrust the U.S, government. America is in the bottom quartile for trust, and saw an additional 5-point drop since its presidential election in November 2020.
